Be it known that l, HENRY C. numn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yalparaiso, in the county of Porter and the State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Producers, of
4 which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, 1s a speci- Y ication.
The present invention relates to gas producers, and in particular to mechanism vadapted for evening or smoothingthe surface of the bed of fuel in a gas producer, whereby to insure a fuel ,bed which is homogeneous in character and of uniform thick- 1guess. To this end it is proposed to suspend a member within the combustion chamber of the producer in contact with the surface of the bed of fuel therein, and to cause relativ'e movementl between said memberrand the fuel, in order to obtain an evening of the surface of the fuel. Oneobjectof the present invention is to secure a suitable means of support for such a member in order to provide for its vertical adjustment .to correspond to changes in the level of the fuel bed. Another object is to provide for an adjustment of said evener member in the plane of the surface of the fuel in order to obtain variations in the action of said inember in crowding the surface fuel toward or from the center ofthe producer. The cover plate f' supports a pair 0f vertical posts 14, one on each side of the longitudinal center of the opening 9. Said posts are joined at their upper endsl by a cross beam 15, which is enlarged at its central portion and provided with an opening for the passage of a cylindrical shaft 16, guide lWheels 17, 17 being provided adjacent said opening in Contact with opposite sides of said shaft to insure its free movement within said opening. It is obvious that the vertical position of the eveiier within the producer may he changed by a simple adjustment 4of the turnbuckle 2T, and for the purpose of rendering this adjustment easy, a weight 29, carried on the free end of lever 24, is employed to substantially counter-balance the weight of the evencr.
The shaft 16 has extending from opposite sides thereof a pair of lateral arms 30, which have enlargements 31 on their outer ends provided with elongated segmental slots 32 through which the posts 11 pass. At each end, each of said slots has a screw threaded hole receiving a screw 33 'bearing at its inner end against a shoe 3l, said shoes being suitably guided for sliding movement longitudinally of the respective slots. Each screw 33 holds its shoe against the side of the corresponding post 14, in order to-hold the evener member 18 and the shaft v16 from rotation. By proper adjustment of the screws 33 it will be apparent that the angular position of the eveiier member 18, with respect to a radius of the producer, can be vai'ied within the limits defined by the width of the opening 9. f
The construction of the evener member 18 renders it peculiarly adaptable to water cooling; the interior of said trough'is at all times accessible from the top of the producer to permit of its being cleaned of deposits of mud and scale while the producer is in op- Furthermore, the means by which the evener member is supported are readily detachable toA permit the removal of Said member for replacement or repairs.
In the operation of the eveiier, the turnbuckle 27 is adjusted to bring the bottom surface of the evener into proper operating position, as determined by the mean level of the fuel in the rotating section 1. The rotation of the bed of fuel brings all portions of its surface into contact with said .evener,
' with the result that all inequalities inthe surface of lthe fuel ,are eliminated. Fresh fuel, fed through a suitable hopper or feeding device 35 is almost immediately carried into Contact with the member 18, and is thereby spread evenly over the surface of the fuel bed. It will be ob-vious that instead of rotating the fuel section 1 to carry the surface of the fuel into contact -with the i evener, the section l may be held stationary and the section 1 or the cover plate 7 rotated to carry the mem-ber 18 into contact with all portions of the surface of the fuel.

By adjusting the screws the evener may be made to assume a position at an angle to said radial position, with its outer end moved slightly toward the advancing` fuel, as shown in Figs.. l and 3. Such an adjustment has a tendency to neutralize the crowding of the'fuel against the outer wall of-tlie producer, and y if desired, the member 18 may beso positioiied as to cause the fuel to be crowded toward the center of the producer. This horizontal adjustment of the evencr isA a highly desirable feature of my invention, and is readily effected when the producer is in operation.
