@Hoang STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IIEUOII'MPHUSY Se ADAMS, 0F BISHOP, GEORGIA.
LOCK DEVICE;
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DoLrHUs S. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bishop, in the county of Oconee, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in lock devices and has particular reference to a lock for application -to the exhaust pipe of an automobile.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock device to be applied to the connection between the exhaust manifold and pipes of an automobile whereby said connection will be prevented from becoming loose with a consequent danger of the gases from the pipe escaping and causing fire or other damage to the machine.
Another object is to provide a lock device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of an exhaust pipe and manifold showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section thereto.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock device in opened position.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates an exhaust manifold pipe to which is connected, in the usual manner by a nut 6, the exhaust pipe 7.
The lock device which comprises the essential feature of this invention is adapted to be applied to the exhaust pipe so as to engage the nut 6 and lock the same against turning so that the connection between the manifold and pipe will be securely maintained and said device preferably comprises a pair of complemental sections 8 hinged together at 9 along adjacent longitudinal edges. When the sections are in closed or operative position the same are preferably Specification of Letters Patent:

vof hexagonal formation so that adjacent ends of the section will engage the sides of the similarly shaped nut G. It is to be understood, of course, that the sections 8 may be of square or other formation depending upon the number of sides with which the nut is provided. The longitudinal edges of the sections 8 opposite the hinO'e 9 are provided with lugs 10 having openings 11 therein adapted to register, when the sections are closed, for receiving a locking bolt 12 which extends through said openings and which is secured in position by a nut 13.
Each section 8 is further provided, upon the end thereof opposite the one which engages the nut 6, with an inwardly directed substantially semicircular iiange 14 the inner curved edges of which are provided with the teeth or serrations 15 which combine with the teeth of the opposite fiange to tightly grip the pipe 7 and prevent longitudinal and rotay movement of the lock device relative thereto after the bolt 12 has been tightened.
In practice, the device is applied so that the ends of sections 8 opposite the flanges 14 will be engaged with the sides of the nut so that the same will be recessed within said ends and' when the sections are brought to closing position the teeth 14 will engage the pipe 7 after which the bolt 12 may be secured to the lugs 10 and by tightening said bolt it will be apparent that the teeth 15 will be caused to bite into the pipe thus preventing any movement of the device relative thereto. In this manner, any turning movement of the nut 6 and consequent loosening of the connection between the pipe and manifold due to vibrationsV of the engine will be prevented.
What is claimed is:-
1. A lock device of the character described, comprising complemental sections pivoted together and adapted to embrace the exhaust pipe of an engine and the connection therebetween and the manifold, adjacent ends of said sections having inwardly directed and coacting flanges provided upon their inner edges with serrations adapted to grip said pipe, and means connecting the sections for clamping the same to said pipe and connection.
2. A lock device of the character described, comprising complemental sections of transverse angular formation pivoted together and adapted to embrace the exhaust and means connecting the sections for clamppipe of an engine in spaced relation and also ing the same to said pi e and connection. 10 engage the connection between said pipe and In testimony whereo I aix my signature, tige manifold, flanges disposed at the ends o in the presence of a witness.
t e sections opposite t ose enga 'ng sai connection and provided with serriions en- DOLPHUS S ADAMS' gaging the exhaust pipe to prevent relative movement of the device with respect thereto,
