To all whom it may] concern Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SQHREIBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Manipulating Train-Pipe End Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates ,to ap 'oaratus for opening and closingthe angle cook or end valve of a railway car train pipe, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and reliable clevice for manipulating the end valve of a train pipe from the platform of the car or other point remote from the valve, so constructed as to permit the lateral movements of the end of the train pipe. On some railroad cars the ends of the train pipes are not rigidly attached to the car but are free to flex for a certain distance back from the angle cock when subjected to lateral stresses, for example, as the train rounds a sharp curve; the purpose of this arrangement being to prevent the breaking of the train'pipe or its connections when the pipe is subjected to these stresses. The invention consists in the novel and improved constructions, arrangements and devices for carrying out the above stated object'which are shown in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafterdescribed and claimed. It will be" obvious, however, that modifications might be made in mechanical details without departure from the principles of the invention which I desire to claim as broadly as the state of the art will permit.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, 25 designates the platform of a railway car, 26 the train pipe and 27 the usual end valve or shut-off cock.
The end of the train pipe has clamped thereto a two- part shoe 28, 29, which bears upon a stirrup 30 secured to the under side of the car. The train pipe may be rigidly fastened to the car by the usual hangers (not shown), the hanger nearest the end being at some distance from the end valve, so that the extremity of the train pipe may bend to a considerable extent under the stresses developed when the train rounds a sharp curve. I have shown the train pipe supported so that it is self-centering, this being the common practice, the stirrup being formed with" two mutually inclined memhere 31, and the under surface of the shoe having a corresponding configuration.
32 is a shaft revolubly mounted on, the car, the shaft being shown as provided with a collar 33 which bears upon the platform 25, the shaft extending through a bracket 34: and being formed witha collar 35 hearing against the underside of the bracket. The lower end of the shaft 32 is secured by means of a cross pin 36 to the socket 37 of a plate 38 attached by screws39 to a block 40, which is generally rectangular in cross section. The block lies within a yoke 41, the block i'elation with the block off cook 27; the shut-elf cock shown being of the usual type havinga revoluble valve.
. 47 is a link lying substantially parallel with link 44 connected at one end to an arm 48 formed on a two- part clamp 49, 50 which is secured to train pipe 26. The other end of the link 47 is pivoted to a bracket 51, formed on theyoke 41. The operating shaft. 32 is provided with a handle 52. The shut-off valve 27 may be provided with the usual handle 53 whlch, however, is not used when the device 1s mampulated from the platform 4 of the car.
Operation: (Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive.) The shut-off cock is operated by turning the shaft 32 by means of the handle 52. The full lines in Fig. 2 show the parts of the apparatus with the cock closed, the dotted lines the position of the corresponding parts when the cock is open. The sliding relation between the yoke 41 and the block 40 on the end of operating shaft 32 permits the extremity of the train pipe 26 to shift transversely of the car without affecting the position of the lever 45 of the revoluble valve member of the cock. Fig. 7 shows the train pipe as shifting in a direction toward the operating shaft. The connection provided by members 48, 49, 50 and link 47 transmits movement from the train pipe to the sliding yoke 41, causing the yoke to slide in the direction of its length on block 40. The links 47, 44 being in substantial parallelism, the pivot points of link 44 are shifted an equal. an'lount so that the movement of the train pipe and of the angle cockas a whole does not result in any change in angular position of the lever 45 which operates the valveof the angle cock. The connections between the links are made sutliciently loose so that the links will not be cramped when the end of the train pipe is raised a trifle by H78 movements In either direction from the central normal position of the pipe. The cock may be opened and closed regardless of the position of the end of the train pipe on stirrup 30.
In Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive I have shown the invention as embodied in .a somewhat different construction. The train pipe 53 is secured by means of clip 54 to a slide 55 which is movable transversely ofthe horizontally disposed portion 56 of the stirrup attached to the under frame 58 of a car, for example, by lag screws 59. The slide 55 is limited in its movements on the stirrup by step pins 60 and is formed with an arm .movements of the train arm on the yoke 64. The parts of the device are so proportloned that a lateral 'movement of the tram pipe and angle 'cock shifts both pivotal points of link 67 an equal amount so that the position of the valve of the cock is not affected by the pipe. I claim: I r
1. In combination, a train pipe of a railway ear supported so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car and provided with a shut-off cock and mechanism for opening and clo'singthe cock, comprising an operating element mounted on the car at a pointremote from the cock, and connecting means between said element and cook constructedso as to accommodate itself to the lateral movements of the pipe.
2. In combination, a train pipe of a railway car supported so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car and provided with a shut off cock and mechanism for opening and closing the cock, comprising an element mounted on the car to be operable from the platform thereof, and connecting means between said element and cook constructed so as to accommodate itself to the lateral movements of the train pipe.
3. I11 combination,a train pipe of a railway car supported so that, its extremity has movement'laterally of the ear and provided with a shut-off cock having aj revoluble valve, and mechanism operable at ahpoint remote from the cock for turning the valve,
which is constructed so as to be unaffected by r the lateral movements of the train pipe.
4. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported thereon so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car, a shut-off cock on the train pipe, an operating shaft revolubly mounted on the car to turn on a fixed axis, and flexible connections between the shaft and cock for opening and closing the latter, which connections are constructed so as to accommodate themselves to the ateral movements of the pipe.

In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car, a
shut-off cock on said train pipe having a revoluble valve, an operating shaft revolublymountedon the car, amember slidably but non-rotatably onnected with the shaft, and a link connecting said slidable member with the valve.
7. In combination, a railway car, a train 7 pipe supported on the car so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car, a shut-off cock on said train pipe having a revoluble valve, an operating shaft revolubl y mounted 011 the car, a member slidably but non-rotatably connected with the shaft, a link connecting said slidable member with the valve, and a link connecting the slidable member with the train pipe.
8. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that its extremity has movement laterally of the car, a shutofi' cock on said train pipe having a revoluble valve, an operating shaft revolubly mounted on the car, a member non-rotatably but slidably connected with said shaft so as to be movable transversely with respect thereto, and links connecting said member with the train pipe and valve respectively.
9. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that its extremity has movement laterally 0f the car, a shut-ofl' cock on said train pipe having a revoluble valve provided with a lever, an operating shaft revolubly mounted on the car, a member non-rotatably but slidably connected with said shaft so as to be movable transversely with respect thereto, an
arm clamped to said train pipe, a link connecting said arm with the slidable member, said slidable member being provided with an arm, and a link connecting said arm with the lever of the valve.
10. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that the extremity thereof is movable laterally with respect to the car, a shut-off cock on the train pipe and mechanism for opening and closing the cock, comprising a shaft revolubly mounted on the car, a block rectangular in cross-section on the end of said shaft, a yoke slidably supported on the block and flexible connections between the block and shut-off cock.
11. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that the extremity thereof is movable laterally with respect to the car, a shutoff cock on the train pipe provided with a revoluble valve having a lever and mechanism for opening and closing the valve, comprising a shaft revolubly mounted on the car, a block rectangular in cross-section on the end of said shaft, a yoke slidably supported on the block, a link con- 1 necting the yoke with the lever of said valve,
an arm clamped to the train pipe, and a link connecting the arm with said yoke.
13. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that the extremity thereof is movable laterally with respect to the car, a shut-01f cock oil the train pipe provided with a revoluble valve, a shaft mounted on the car having a fixed axis of revolution, a pair of members slidably and non-rotatably engaged with each other, one of which is fixed to said shaft, and mechanism comprising a pivoted link for connecting the other member with said valve whereby the pipe may move laterally without disturbin the valve.
14. In combination, a railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that the extremity thereof is movable laterally with respect to the car, a shut-off cock on the train pipe provided with a revoluble valve, a shaft mounted on the car having a fixed axis of revolution, a pair of members slidably and non-rotatably engaged with each other, one of which is fixed to said shaft, and mechanism comprising links independently c011- necting said other member with the valve and with the end of the train pipe whereby the pipe may move laterally without disturbing the valve.
15. In combinatioma railway car, a train pipe supported on the car so that the extremity thereof is movable laterally with respect to the car, a shut-off cock on the train pipe provided with a lever, a shaft mounted on the car having a fixed axis of revolution, a pair of members slidably and non-rotatably engaged with each other, one of which is fixed to said shaft and the other of which is provided with a rigid projecting arm, a link connecting said arm with the lever of the cook, a lever hav ing a fixed relation with the end of the train pipe, and a link connecting said element with the last mentioned slidable member.
