Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1913.
Application filed April 8, 1918. Serial No. 227,302.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORA SCHAHFER, a
citizen of the `United. States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and 'State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Folding Camping Outfit, of which the following is a specification.
Itis the object of this invention to provide a structure including benches, a table therebetween, and a canopy shielding the table 'and-the benches, the device being so constructed that it can be folded up.into small compass when not in use, the structure being of peculiar utility on camping excursions, at picnics, and elsewhere.
' It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sort to which the invention appertains.
Changes such as a mechanic might makexnay be resorted to, withinthe scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l shows in side elevation, a folding camping outfit constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the upper part of the canopy, portions appearing in elevation.
in carrying out the Ainvention there 1s provided a pair of benches 1 and 2, each including a seat 3 having cleats 4 to which the upper ends of theinner legs 5 and the outer legs 6 are pivoted, by means of clamp screws 7, or in any other suitable manner. The outer legs 6.of each bench are connected by a cross bar 8. The legs 5 carry pivot elements 9, which may be clamp screws, engaged with inclined braces 10' having notches ll adapted to coact with the clamp screws l2 carried by the outer legs 6. rlhe invention comprises parallel sills 14 and each sill 14 includes a long section 15 and a short section 16, the sections l5 and 16 being united by means of hinges 17, so that the sills can be folded vertically.
By means of the clamp screws 29, the legs 5 and 6 of the bench 1 are attached to the sections 15 of the sills 14, the legs 5 and 6 of the bench 2 being attached in a like manner to the members 16, the legs 23 and 24 of the table being attached in a like Way to the part 15, the table being disposed between the benches, as shown inFigs. .1 and 3.
The structure includes a canopy 30 com` prislng uprights 31 extended downwardly through the notches 21 in the table top 19 and through the keepers 22, the uprights having reduced ends 32 received in the keep ers 33 attached to the sections 15 of the sills 14, the reduced ends of the uprights forming shoulders 34 therein, which, coperating with` the keepers 33, prevent the uprights from sliding downwardly. A horizontal top bar 35 isdisposed between the upper ends of the uprights 31. Pins 36 are provided, the innery ends of the pins being threaded at 37 Iinto the ends of the top bar 35, the pins carrying abutment plates 38 which engage the end of the bar 35.
The pins 36 pass through the upper ends of the uprights 31 as shown in Fig. 4. lnclined rafters 39 are provided, the upper endsof the rafters being mounted on the 'pins 36, on the opposite sides of the uprights 31. fing nuts 40 are threaded on the ends of the pins 36 and serve to hold the top bar 35, the rafters 39 and the uprights31 together in a way which will be understood readily from'Fig. 4.
The utility of the structure will be seen without difliculty when Figs. 1 and 3 are noted. A person sitting on ,either of the benches 1 or 2 may use the table 18, the canopy 30 extending above both the benches and the table.
One of the main advantages of the device is that it can be collapsed and folded into small compass for shipment, for transporhinges 17. The uprights 31 of the canopy may be drawn upwardly out of the keep- - ers 22 and 33, and when the braces 26 are detached from the legs 24 of the table, the
table can be folded down so as to occupy but ed toget Thus, the braces 10 can be de` Lacasse little space. The braces 41 may be detached from the rafters 39 or from` the uprights 31, thereby 1permitting the rafters '39 to be fold.
er, one or both of the rollers 44 being rotated to wind the cover 47 thereon',l the Y uprights 31 being swung on the pin 36 into substantial alinement with the folded rafters 39.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is y In a device of the 'class described, sills comprising relatively foldable parts; hinges connecting said parts; a table including legs pivoted to one of said parts; a bench adjacent the table and comprising legs pivoted to the other of said parts; and means for holding the legs against movement with respect to the sills. n v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signa ture 1n the presence of two witnesses.
FLORA SCHAHFER.
