IMPROVEMENTIN EXTENSIQN TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,330, dated June 25, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Y Be it known that I, LEVI SHOWALTER, of Beetown, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Extension Tables and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of an under-side view of my improved table fully extended. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the same table partly folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view.

This invention has rel ation to extension dining-tables; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the bars to which the legs are attached, and which are adjust able to uphold the leaves according as the table is extended, substantially as hereinafter described.

The table to which my invention relates is represented as having six leaves, hinged together, and six legs. 7 e

The legs A are attached to the ends of bars A which are pivoted to cleats A secured to the leaves at. These cleats are so arranged, by means of blocks 1), as to leave spaces between their upper surfaces and the bottom of the table. The legs A are arranged in pairs, and the inner ends of the bars to which they are attached are connected by means of the tongue-and-groove arrangement B, shown at Fig. 3. The object of this arrangement is to make both legs work together, so that when one is drawn out or pushed back the other will be also similarly moved. The bars A and legs A serve to uphold the leaves a when drawn out underneath them. The cleats A allow the bars A to work above them, and are recessed at A to receive the shoulders A, and to allow the bars A to be pushed back behind the hinges B Stops a regulate the distance to which the legs A are to be drawn out. D designates the middle legs, attached to sweeping bars D, pivoted at one end to the cleats A These bars are pivoted respectively at opposite sides of the table, and are arranged to be swung out underneath the leaves a when the latter are lifted. The free ends of each of said bars, when the bar is swung out, passes above the end of the opposite cleat and strikes one of the blocks 7), which limits its movement. It will be seen that the hinges h, which attach the leaves a to the leaves 0?, are arranged to work at such a distance outside theedges of the leaves a that said leaves may be dropped down, as shown in Fig. 2, and the correspondin gly ton gued-andgrooved edges of the leaves a brought together.

The arrangement of leaves enables this table to be folded up in various ways, for convenience in transportation, &c.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The pivoted bars A holding the legs A, and connected for mutual operation by means of the tongue-and-groove arrangement B, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the fixed leaves a (0 having the notched and slotted cleats A the interlocking leg-bars A and the latching side-leg bars D, of the end leaves a a and center leaves a 0?, all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
