CULINARY ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 2a, 1918.
Application filed January 28, 1916. Serial No. 74,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. NORDEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re.- siding at South Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbiaand Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Culinary .Articles, of which the following is, a specification. j
l The present invention relates to culinary articles and as its general object, itoontemplates the provision of a noveldevice of this nature that is especially designed for cleans ing' and scraping. the inner. walls of, pots, pans and other cooking utensils, and which by reason of its novel construction, may be easily and quickly operated, with little exertion on the part of the user. I
A further objectof my invention is to provide a device of the type in question that is extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and highly practical from both the standpoint of the manufacturer and the standpoint of the user; and which, it is believed, may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance, of the following description.
These objects are accomplished by such means asare shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claims. j
In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like partsthroughout the several views Figure 1 is a view in my improved device as bodiment;
Fig. 2 is. a view in top plan of the culinary article, showing the same equipped with a cleaning brush; v
Fig- 3 is a view inperspective of a novel form of cleaning brush and back therefor,
perspective showing in its preferred emthat may be employed in connection. with my invention;
Fig. ,4. isa view intop plan of the device in a slightly modified form L Q I "Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the side scrapers that are employed in connection with the device as shownin Fig. 4:, illustrating more clearly the manner of attaching the same to the base. 7
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it is pointed out that the body structure, as well as the side scrapers and the brush retaining flanges may be made from an integral piece of metal, or other desirable material, to the end that the device is rendered more durable and its longevity added materially to, while its cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum. However, although this constitutes the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be fully understood that I do not limit myselfin any definite manner to this construction, since it may be varied materially within thepurview of the invention.
In reducing my invention to practice, I first provide a base or body member 10, that is preferably formed of metal, having its longitudinal marginal edges curved and formed into scraping flangesll and 12, respectively, extending from the intermediate portion of the body 10 and at an angle thereto. By-reason ,of the curved marginal edges of the scraping flanges, it is obvious that they may be used more expeditiously in connection with the curved sides of circular utensils, since they are more susceptible of conforming with the contour of the respective walls. On its respective ends, the base 10 is provided with upstanding side portions 13 and la respectively, that may be formed integral therewith, if it is so desired the side portion 13 having its longitudinal marginal edges bent to form side scraping flanges 15 and 16, while the longitudinal edges of the other side portions are bent to form suitable brush retaining flanges 17. Scraping flanges 11 and 15 are continuous at their meeting point, that is, the flange 15 is substantially a continuation or lateral projection of the flange 11 and vice versa, there being no space, gap or interruption between them. As before stated, the side pieces 13 and 1 1 may be stamped from a single piece of metal to be integral with the base 10, which is also true of the scraping blades 11 and 12, 15 and 16 and the brush retaining flanges 17. Cons'equently, it will be noted that the entire body structure of the device may be formed in a solid piece whereby its durability is materially added to while the cost of manufacture of the device, as a whole, is materially decreased.
After thebending of the side portions 13 and 14 into the positions shown in Figs. 1
and 2, a handle portion 18 may be interposed therebetween, such as shown, suitable fastening members 19 being employed to.-
disposition, such as shown in Fig. 1, it is apparent that the hand of the operator will be protected at all times, not withstanding the fact thatthe device may be freelymaniplated to scrape either the side or bottom walls of the respective cooking utensils.
Under certain conditions, it has .been found expedient to provide the scraping blades 12 with suitably spaced cut outs or notches 20 whereby it may be utilized to dislodge the hardened concretions' formed on the walls of the cooking utensils. By the formation of these spaced cut outs or notches, it is apparent that the scraping edge of the respectivev blade 12 presentsa continuously toothed surface thatis highlyeffe'ctual for this particular purpose.
In Fig. 3,. I have shown a novel form of brush, 2Iwhose base 22 carries a securing rib 23, that is substantially wedge-shaped when viewed in cross section, for the purpose of reception between the respective retaining flanges 17 of the side piece 14 of the device. The brush may be positioned in place in connection with the device, such as shown in Fig. 2, whereby it may be utilized to brush the foreign particles which. have been loosened from theside walls of the cooking uten sil through the instrumentality of the scraper blade, and subsequently remove the same therefrom. By using the brush in. this capacity, it is believed that a distinct cooperation is resultant, whereby the necessity of employing a separate brush or other device for removing the foreign mrticlesfrom the utcnsihafter they have been loosened by the respective scraper blades is eliminated.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I have shown myinvention as in a slightly modified form, which form will be found very eflicient under certain conditions. In this form the base 24 is stamped in the usual manner, however, the longitudinal marginal edges thereof may be cut to extend in parallel relation to each other instead of being curved,'as in the form above referred to and subsequently bent to form'the scraper blades 25,. At one end, the base 2lis provided with an end piece 26 that may be formed integral therewith, such as in the form above referred to,-while the latterhas its longitudinal marginal edges bent to form the brush retaining flanges 27,
similar to the flanges l7in'the other form. At its otherend, the base 24: is provided with a second end piece 28 which, as shown in Fig. 5, is bent uponits longitudinal; censo that its side portions extend from each other at a substantially obtuse angle, the marginal edges of the side portions themselves forming thesidescraper blades 29, without the necessity of further bending. At itslower end, the piece 28 is provided with a series of stamped cars 30 which are designed; to be received through suitable apertures in the base 22L, after which they may be bent in the usual manner to securely retain the end piece in position. ()n the other hand, to add to therigidity of 'the side scraper blades 29, the upper marginal edge of the end piece 28 may be overlapped as at 31 (see Fig. 4). V V
From the foregoing, it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understoodan'd, therefore, further detail description is deemed unnecessary."
In reducing. my invention to practice, I find .that both forms thereof as shown here in, are practical and eflicient; but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrencewith the adoption of my device, .I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required Without sacrificing any ofthe advantages ofmy invention,.as defined inthe appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l 1. In a culinary article of the character described, a base having scraping flanges, side pieces associated with said base, scraping flanges associatedfwith one of said side pieces, means to attach a cleaning structure to the other of said side pieces, and a handle portion, as and for the purpose specified.

In a culinaryartiele of the character described, abase having scraping flanges, sidepieces associated with said base, scraping flanges on one of said side pieces, means to attach a cleaning structure to the other of said side pieces, and a handle connecting said side pieces by which the device may be operated, as and for the purpose specified.
8. In a culinary article of the character described, a base, scraping flanges on said base, side pieces formed integral with said base to extend therefrom at anangle, scraping flanges on one ofsaid side pieces, retaining. flanges on the other of saidside pieces, and a handle member associated with said side pieces, as and for the purpose specified.
4,111 a culinary article of the character described, a base, scraping flanges formed-on the base, and having their outer marginal edges curved, side pieces associated with said base, scraping flanges on one of said side pieces, retaining flanges on the other of said side pieces, and a handle portion connecting said side pieces substantially intermediate their ends, as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a culinary article of the character described, a base, said base being ovalshaped When Viewed in plan, scraping flanges formed at the longitudinal marginal edges of said base, side pieces extending substantially at right angles from said base, and a handle portion connecting said side pieces, as and for the purpose specified.
