PATTERN MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
Application filed January 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Ennnrnon R. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Pattern Mechanism for Looms, of
which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to pattern mechanism for looms of the type in which two sets or series of pattern indicating members or rolls are used.-
It is the general object of my invention to improve and simplify the construction of such pattern mechanism and to make provision for quickly and readily rendering either set of pattern rolls or members operative.
With this general object in view an important feature of my invention relates to improved devices by means of which a single indicating lever may be placed in operative relation with eitherof the two sets of pat tern rolls. Further features of my inven tion relate to devices carried by said lever 'fo'rreleasing the pattern chain to permit its manual adjustment, in either direction, and also to a device for temporarily rendering the feed pawl inoperative.
My invention further relates to certain arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and 7 more particularly ,pointed' out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved pattern mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of certain of the parts shown in Fig. 2, but occupying a different position, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown an indicating lever 10 which is pivoted to the frame and may be connected by a link 11 (Fig. 2) to that part of the loom which is to be controlled by the pattern mechanism.
A pattern chain 12 of the usual type and having two sets of pattern rolls 13 and 14 (Fig. 1) thereon is mounted upon a pair of sprockets or gears 15 secured to a shaft 16. The rolls 13 and 14 are engaged by swinging arms 17 and 18 (Fig. 2) through which mo- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 140,452.
tion is transmitted to an engaging member 20 pivoted at 21 to the lever 10. The member 20 is provided with two lugs or projections 22 and 23, and when in the position shown in Fig. 2 the lug 22 cooperates with the swinging arm 17 and transmits the inclication of the roll 13 to the indicating lever 10. When the member 20 is in this position the rolls 14 and the swinging arm 18 are inoperative. When it is desired to place the rolls 14 in operation the engaging member 20 is manually moved to the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the projection 23 thereof engages the swinging arm 18, thus transmitting the indication of the rolls 14 to the lever 10 By this simple construction I am thus enabled to readily place the lever 10 in operative relation with either of two difi'erent series of pattern indicating members.
The shaft 16 is rotatably mounted in bearings in the frame 30 and has secured thereto a ratchet 31, a locking disk 32 and a handle 33. The ratchet 31 is engaged by a pawl 34 pivoted at 35 to a bell crank 36 which is given an oscillating motion by a link 37 connected to any suitable source of power. The pawl 34 has a weighted portion 38 which serves as a handle and which also normally retains the pawl yieldingly in engagement with the ratchet 31. The pawl 34 is also provided with a notch 39 adapted to receive the end of a spring plunger 40 when the handle 38 is raised, said plunger being mounted in an extension of the bell crank 36 and yieldingly retaining the pawl 34 in the inoperative dotted line position shown in Fig. 4. This device enables me to render the pawl inoperative when the pattern chain is to be turned backward The disk 32 1s provlded wlth a series'of notches 39f corresponding in number to the teeth of the sprockets 15 and adapted to re ceive a V-shaped projection 41 formed on the lower edge of a lever 42 pivoted to the frame at 43, and forced yieldingly downward by a spring 44 acting through a rod 45 slidable in a lug 46 fixed in the frame 30. This sitioned for engagement by a stud 49 (Fig. 1) carried by the engaging member 20'. The cooperation of the flange and stud prevent accidental reversal of the member 20. and by moving the member 20 to its intermediate or neutral position, the stud 49 becomes ef fective to raise the lever 42 to a position in which its lug 41 is out of the path of the disk 32. It will be evident that by raising the handle 88 to render the feed pawl inoperative and by moving the engaging member 20 to intermediate or neutral position to release the disk 32 the pattern mechanism will be left entirely free for manual adjustment in either direction.
By the coiistruction above described I am enabled to render either series of pattern rolls effective to operate the indicating lever 10 and I am also enabled to entirely disengage the pattern mechanism for adjustment.
Having thus described my invention it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I do claim is 1. In a loom, an indicating lever, a pattern cylinder, a pattern chaln having two sets of pattern indicating members positioned side by side and axially of said cylinder, and a single manually movable engaging device mounted on said lever and having ofi'set portions movable alternately into position to engage one or the other set of pattern indicating members, and to thereby render the same operative.
2. In a loom, an indicating lever, a pattern chain having two sets of pattern rolls thereon, separate swinging arms engaging said rolls, and an engaging device mounted on said lever and manually movable to associate said lever with either one of said swinging arms.
3. In a loom, an indicating lever, a pat tern chain, means to feed said chain intermittently, said means including a feed pawl and ratchet, a locking lever, and separate manually operative means to render said feed pawl and locking lever inoperative and to hold said parts in inoperative position, thus permitting manual adjustment of said pattern chain.
4. In a 100m, an indicating lever, a pattern chain having two sets of pattern indicating members thereon, a disk mounted to move with said pattern chain, a locking lever for said disk, an engaging device mounted on said indicating lever and manually movable to establish operative relations between said lever and either of said sets of pattern indicating members, and means on said engaging device to render said locking lever inoperative.
5. In a loom, an indicating lever, a pattern chain having two sets of pattern indicating members thereon, a disk mounted to move with said pattern chain, a locking lever for said disk. an engaging device mounted on said indicating lever and manually movable to establish operative relations between said lever and either of said sets of pattern indicating members, a stud on said engaging device, and a cam shaped projection on said locking lever cooperating with said stud to raise said locking lever to inoperative position while said engaging device is in neutral position.
6. In a loom, an indicating lever, a pattern chain having two sets of pattern indicating members thereon, a disk mounted to move with said. pattern chain, a locking lever for said disk, an engaging device mounted on said indicating lever and manually movable to establish operative 'elations between said lever and either of said sets of pattern indicating members, said engaging device being also movable to neutral position, and cooperating devices on said engaging device and said lockinglever eflective to render said lever inoperative when said engaging device is moved to neutral position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
