IMPLEMENT FOR UNITING PAPER SHEETS.

To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BU P, a citizen of the United States, and resident of La Crosse, WVisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Uniting Paper Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an organization for uniting paper sheets and it consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The structure includes a base 1 formed of a lower plate united by its flanged edge with the upper plate, this upper plate having openings for the passage of the tongue outter 2 and the punch 3. The tongue cutter is mounted upon the lower end of an inner carrier 4., which is formed ofsheet metal in tubular form, this carrier being adapted to work within an outer carrier 5, also of.
sheet metal and of tubular form and this I outer carrier in turn works within a tubular portion of a standard 7 also formed of sheet metal. This standard is formed in one piece, its sides being separated from each other to provide for the location in between them of the punch and devices associated therewith, the said'standard being open at its lower side and closed at its top by its flanges 7 coming together edge to edge and a suit-able rivet at 7 holds the sides of this upper standard in place. This standard is also provided with integral feet 8 which are held by screws 9 to the base of the device, these feet, however, resting on a tongue cutter die plate 10, which rests upon the upper surface of the base and also a punch die plate 11, which also rests upon the upper surface of the base, these die plates having openings for the passage of the tongue cutter 2 and the punch 3, respectively and the same screws 9 which hold the standard 7 to the base hold these die plates in place. The outer carrier 5 has a bottom plate 12 secured thereto in any suitablemannor as by tongues on the lower edge of the carrier bent into connection with the walls of openings in the bottom plate, this bottom plate having an opening for the passage of the needle 13 and for the tongue folder 14: and having also an upwardly extending projection 15 for the tongue folder-to work against. This bottom plate 12 has a rear extension 16 bent upwardly and then extending horizontally and forked to overlie a spring tonguel'? of a stripper plate 18 for the punch, this stripper plate having an opening for the passage of the punch and beinglield parallel with but in a plane above the punch die'plate 11 and spaced apart therespace for the insertion of the paper to be punched. This stripper plate is bifurcated, providing thelimbs 19 through which the screws 9 pass and between these limbs is the spring tongue 17 upon which, as above stated, the extension of the bottom plate 16 lies. This bottom plate 16 of the outer carrier performs the function of a stripper plate in connection with the tongue cutter 2, and because as stated this stripper plate 16 has an extension overlying the spring tongue of the punch stripper plate the outer carrier 5 will normally be held in an elevated position with the extended edge of the stripper plate 16 resting against the bottom edge of the tubular portion of the standard 7 theupward movement of the outer carrier being thereby limited to locate the parts associated therewith in normal position ready for action. The tongue cutter 2 together with the needle 13 and the tongue folder 14:, are all mounted at the lower end of the inner carrier 1, as will be hereinafter particularly described.
This inner carrier has a head 20 at its upper end which is secured thereto by a depending rim 21 of the head embracing the upper end of the "inner carrier, which has a notch 22 receiving an indent 23 on the depending rim. A spring 241 bears at its upper end upon the head of the inner carrier and its lower end is seated in a sheet metal cup 25, which rests upon a cross pin 26 supported in the wall of the outer carrier and passing through slots 27 in the inner carrier.
It will be seen from this construction that the outer carrier, together with the inner carrier being held normally up by the spring tongue 17, that downward pressure on the head 20 will first move the inner and outer carriers as one body downwardly by over coming the tension of the spring tongue and this conjoint movement of the inner and outer carriers will proceed until the stripper plate 12 attached to the lower end of the outer carrier bears upon the paper to be cut and united and thereupon the downward movement of the outer carrier will cease and continued pressure will then result in the downward movement of the inner carrier relative to the outer carrier the spring 24- yielding for this purpose and thus the tools carried by the lower end of the inner carrier will be made to perform their work in the known manner; that is to say, the tongue cutter will cut a tongue of substantially V- shape from the superimposed sheets of paper to be united; the needle will make a slit in the paper in line with the base of the tongue but at a point separated therefrom, and the folder will turn the paper tongue or tongues and make the ends thereof pass through the eye of the needle and then upon the release of the pressure on the head 20 the carriers will rise and assume their normal relative positions, the needle meanwhile drawing the end of the paper tongue or tongues up through the slit and thus uniting the sheets.
As before stated, the inner carrier is of tubular form and is made by bending a sheet of metal into said tubular form, leaving a slot at one side at 28 where the edges of the sheet metal are brought adjacent each other and it will be observed that the lower end of this tubular carrier is swaged from opposite sides inwardly and the flattened walls thus provided are clamped together by a screw and nut 29, 30.
The sheet metal needle, together with the upper walls or extensions 31'of the cutter are clamped between these flattened walls 32 at the lower end of the inner carrier. The tongue folder is pivotally mounted 011 a pin 33, which is held by the upper walls of the tongue cutter, which as in former practice, is substantially V-shape in cross section and is formed of sheet metal,
The rear of the tongue cutter shank is cut out at 34 and this part of the tongue cutter member is left exposed between the parallel walls 32. at the lower end of the carrier. These parallel walls at the opposite'sides of the carrier have extensions 35, which are parallel with each other and are spaced apart and receive between them the extreme front end of a lever 36, this lever being pivotally mounted at its rear end on a pin 37, mounted in the side walls of the standard 7. The
front end of the lever is connected with the extensions 35 by a pin 38 passing into the slots 39 in the extensions 35. At a point intermediate of its length this lever is provided with a notch or slot 40, which receives a pin on a carrier frame or member 41 of sheet metal to which the punch 3 is secured as by riveting. This frame has upstanding sides with grooves on the outer faces thereof extending vertically, which receive guideways 42 secured to the inner faces of the side walls of the standard 7, as for instance, by pins 43. These guides direct the vertical movement of the punch carrying frame as it is operated up and down by means of the lever 36. This'lever together with the punch and its carrying frame are all arranged be tween the side walls of the standard 7 and of course the extensions 35 of the inner carrier also lie between these walls. These extensions 35 extend out through the sloth of the outer carrier and bear closely against the edges of this slot so that the inner carrier will be accurately guided in the outer carrier and will be prevented from circumferential displacement in respect thereto, whereas the outer carrier is held against circumferential displacement bymeans of the extension 16 of the stripper plate 12 working between the lower portions of the side walls of the standard 7 it being noted that these side walls at une point 7' extend down below the plane 01 llO the stripper plate 12 when this is in normal upper position and far enough to act as guiding means for the extension 16 of the stripper plate 12 throughout the entire vertical movement of the outer carrier. This construction will hold the tongue cutter, the needle, and the tongue folder all in proper position relative to the die plate 10, because as just stated, the outer carrier will be held by its stripper plate extension against circumferential displacement, and because the extensions 35 of the lower upset walls of the inner carrier fit closely against the edges of the slot in the lower carrier.
It will be observed from Fig. 9 that the tongue cutter is cut away at 31*. The upper end of the needle fits in grooves 31 of the tongue cutter and its laterally enlarged upper portion fits in the recess at 31", or rather the upper end of the needle is provided w th a lateral projection 13*, Figs. 7 and 10, which fits over the edge of the tongue cutter shank at 31*. The inner carrier has a tongue 49 pressed inwardly from its wall and the upper edge of the tongue cutter shank finds a bearing against the underside of this tongue.
The outer carrier is provided with lugs 5 cut from its wall and pressed in, which afford lateral supports for the tongue cutter 2.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In combination a base, a standard, an outer carrier of tubular form guided. in said standard and having a rear vertical. slot or passageway, a stripper plate on the lower end of the outer carrier having a rearward extension lying between the side walls of the slot to hold said carrier against circumferential displacement, an inner carrier having means at its lower end to act upon paper sheets, a spring for raising the 1nner carrier relatively to the outer carrier, and means for lifting the outer carrier.
In combination a base, a standard, an outer carrier of tubular form guided in said standard and having a rear vertical clongated slot or passageway, a stripper plate on the lower end of the outer carrier having a rearward extension lying between the side walls of said slot to hold said carrier against circumferential displacement, an inner carrier having means at its lower end to act upon paper sheets, said inner carrier having an extension projecting through the slot in the outer carrier. a spring for raising the inner carrier relatively to the outer carrier, a spring acting directly on said rearward extension for lifting the outer carrier, said extension of the inner carrier being in the form of a pair of ears serving as stops to prevent circumferc-mtial displacement of the inner carrier by bearing on the edge of the slot of the outer carrier, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a base, a standard having spaced parallel walls and a tubular 'rier and having an extension lying between the vertical walls of the standard, to hold the outer carrier against circumferential displacement, and a'spring plate on the base acting on said extension to lift the outer carrier, substantially as described.
4. In combination a base, a standard composed of fiat sides spaced apart and having laterally extending feet. a carrier guided at one end of the standard, means for moving said carrier vertically, means on the carrier for acting on paper sheets supported by the base, a die plate for the means on the lower end of the carrier, said die plate having portions lying beneath the feet of the standard, a stripper plate for the standard overlying said feet and screws holding said feet with the stripper plate and die plates to the base, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a base, a standard composed of parallel sides spaced apart and a guideway at one of its ends, a carrier moving in said guideway, said carrier consisting of telescoping parts, means 011 the inner part for acting on paper sheets placed on the base, a spring for lifting the inner part, a stripper plate attached to the lower end of the outer part of the carrier, a handle for pressing the two-part carrier downwardly, said standard having feet extending laterally from its sides, a die plate resting on the base, and extending under the feet and under the twopart carrier, a plate resting on the base and arranged under the said feet of the standard and having a spring portion engaging a part of the stripper plate for lifting the outer part of the telescoping carrier, and screws for securing said feet with the plates to the base, substantially as described- 6. In combination, a tubular carrier ha ving its lower portion of its wall flattened, a tongue cutter clamped between said flat walls, and a needle and tongue folder, sul stantially as described.
7. In combination, a carrier of sheet metal turned into tubular form with the lower parts of its wall flattened and held together by a screw passing between said flat walls, a tongue cutter clamped between said flat walls and a needle and a tongue folder, sub stantially as described.
8. In combination, a carrier, a tongue cut ter of substantially V-shape in cross section having lateral extensions of its upper walls, a needle between said extensions, and means inner carrier, two lugs bent inwardly at the lower end of the outer carrier, a tongue cutter clamped between theparallel walls resting against the horizontal tongue and between the lugs, a needle and a tongue folder, substantially as described.
