ROOF FLASHING.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 8 I918.

JAMES BROPSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
. ROOF-FLASHING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed July 8, 1918. Serial No. 243,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BRoPsoN, a citizen of the United States residing at Cleveland, in the county of duyahoga and State of Ohio,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof Flashings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roof flashings,
and has for its object to produce a device or construction improved with respect to the manner of attaching the same to the roof; also with respect to the means for packing the joint between the pipe and the body; and also provided with improved means for supporting the pipe while the packing is being put in place.
The flashing is of that type which accommodates itself to roofs having diflerent angles, the top of the body being circular where the packing is inserted and the bottom being elliptical so that the pipe can occupy different angular positions in the flashing.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the flashing on a roof of one pitch, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same on a roof of a diiferent pitch. Fig. 3 is a top view of the body of the flashing. Fig. 4 is a top view of an adjustable packing ring. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of a base ring. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 4:.
In the drawings, 6 indicates the roof boards, 7 the shingles or other roof covering, and 8 the pipe extending through the opening of the roof.
The flashing includes an elliptical base ring 9 which at its inner edge has an upstanding fiange 10. The body of the flashing comprises a hollow casting 11, the base of which is elliptical and the top of which is circular, the base and top planes being at an angle to each other. The bottom of the body fits around the flange 10 or outside thereof and has a base flange 12 which matches the ring 9, to which it is fastened by bolts 13, a sheet of lead or the like indicated at 14 being inserted between the body and the base ring, to seal the joint when the parts are clamped together, and this sheet 14 extends upwardly between the flange 10 and the adjacent inner surface of the body, as shown at 16, thereby completely closing the joint between the base and the body.
At the top, the body has a shoulder 17 which forms a seat for the packing ring 18. The bore of this ring extends at an angle to its axis as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 7, Whereas the periphery of the ring is circular, and in fitting the same to the pipe it may be turned on its seat 17 to make the bore or opening coincide with the surface of the pipe 8. Thus in Fig. 1 it is shown in one position and in Fig. 2 it is shown turned half way around to the opposite position. This ring is made of soft metal and after being properly adjusted is tamped to make a tight joint between the body and the pipe. It can, however, be very quickly set in place and forms a metal packing which does not have to be melted when inserted.
The lead sheet 14, it will be noted, extends outwardly between the roof boards and the covering and makes a water-tight joint between the flashing and the roof.
In order to hold the pipe in position while the packing is being inserted, I provide a pair of set screws 20, tapped through opposite sides of the body 11, and by setting in these screws against the pipe 8, the latter can be centered and held in the proper position while the joint is being made.
I claim:
1. A flashing comprising a joint body with an opening at the top and an inner shoulder to support packing at said opening, and set screws tapped through the sides of the body below said shoulder, to hold a pipe in said body while it is being packed.
2. A flashing comprising a joint body having an opening at the top and an inner shoulder below said opening, and a packing ring resting on said shoulder, said ring being adjustable around within said opening, to accommodate pipes extending through the body at difl'erent angles.
In testimony whereof, I do affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, G. W. ROSENBERG.
