SWITCH-LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Pct. 22, 1918.
Gontinuationv of application led October 14, 1916, Serial No. 125,532. This application filed June 14, 1917. Serial No. 174,658.
T all whom t mayv concern.'
Be it known thatv I, GEORGE F. Viiiss, a
xresident of Springfield, county of Sangamon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in switch-locking mechanism, the principal objects being the provision of such a device which is simple and strong in construction,
.efficient in operation, and inexpensive to maintain.
A further object of my invention is the provision of such a device including means connected to the movable tongue of a switch to operate a locking lever which engages a locking member, the latter being in the form of a double inclined faced or curved bar pivoted at one end and resiliently held at Y the other, whereby the-locking lever will be heldv on either sideof the apex or summit of the curved bar against accidental movement,
consequently holding and locking the tonguer of the switch in its adjusted position, until positively moved by the actuation of the usual operating means.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a simple and adjusting means for attaching the box to the rail so as to securely hold it in position.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of.
parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the vaccompanying drawing forming a part hereof and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being expressly understood that In the drawings, no means is shownfor actuating or moving the tongue of the switch, as that forms no part of this invention, which is vmerely directed to the slidably and adjustably receive the head of the securing bolt or other means, these bolts passing through suitable holes or apertures in the rail, the'slots permitting the necessary adjustment of lthe casing, whereby a simple and effective means of securing the' 'casing to the rail is provided.y
The casing 1 is apertured and provided with a stufing box, as .at a, through which rod 5 passes. This rod is securedto the tongue 6 of the switch by nuts 7 on each side thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the stuhng box prevents leakage of the nonfreezingvfluid, the casing being air tight and illed with the fluid. This rod 5 is provided on one end with the member 8 having an oblong recess 9 provided therein, in which fits the rounded head 9 on the short end of locking lever 10 .which is pivoted on pin 11 connected to ear 12.V This locking lever 10 has its end bifurcated or forked as at 18 and has mounted therein the roller 14. This roller member bears on the locking member 15, the forked portionv 13 of locking lever 10 extending1 on each side thereof. Locking member 15 is pivoted as at 16 to one side of the casing and has its free end connected to the spring member 17 the other end of which is connected topan end wall of the casing. This locking member 15 is formed on a sort of a double curve or incline leading to an apex or summit 18 and having a depression 19 near the free end thereofand another depression19 near the other end thereof.
The locking lever 10 through the connec tions shown is adapted to be moved when the switch tongue is thrown and is moved on the locking member 15 accordingly, so that the roller in the forked portion is positioned on one side ofthe summit or apex 18, de-` pending on the position to which the tongue is thrown, the spring 17 being of siiliicientstrength to normally hold the locking memutilized to prevent leakage of oil or other non-freezing {iuid in the casing. j
This simple construction will effectively prevent accidental movement of the tongue of the switch, securely holding'itagainst the proper rail, and preventing accidental damage. It may be readily placed in position and secured t0 the rail, being embedded in cement or the like, with its top or cover eX- posed, so as to permit access for examination or other purposes. j
This application is filed as a continuation of my previous application, Serial Number 125,532, led October 111th 1916.
