is automatically brought to a stop after having run by a dang'er signal.
From the foregoing description in conneet-ion with the accompanying drawings, it Will be seen that I have provided a very simple and reliable automatic means for stopping a train should the engineer disregard a danger signal.
It is to be understood that While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not Wish to be limited to this exact construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, but may make such changes as Will fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In a device of the character described, the combination With a locomotive7 of valves through which the steam and compressed air flow, arms connected to said valves, a rack bar pivotally connected to said arms, a paivl engaging said rack bar to lock the same against movement in one direction, a bell-.crank lever connected at one of its ends with said rack bar, and a depending arm rigid with said bell-crank lever for engagement with an obstacle.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a locomotive, of valves through which steam and compressed air flow, depending arms for actuating the valves whereby the air brakes may be set and the flow of steam through the cylinder cut off, a horizontal rack bar pivotally connected to the lower extremities of the arms and supported thereby, a pawl engaging the rack bar and locking it against movement in one direction, a pivoted bell-crank lever connected at the extremity of one of its arms to the rack bar, and an arm depending from the other extremity of the bell-crank lever for engagement with an obstacle, whereby the rack bar is moved longitudinally and the valves actuated.
In testimony Whereorn l ailix my signature in presence ot two Witnesses.
VILLIAM PICK.
