Description

A. HCINBGTHEM. Improvement in Devices for Holding Bibbs During the Operation of Soldering;

ALEXANDER IIIGINBOTHEM, OF- NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE HIOINBOTHEM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDiNG BIBS DURING THE OPERATION OF SOLDERING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,226, dated June 25, 1872.
the ordinary methods of holding the bib are open to serious objection. If the bib is allowed to move, even to a slight extent, before the joint is sufficiently cool, it produces a crack,
and the solder must be melted off and the work all done over. In order to guard against this it is common for plumbers to embed the opposite end of the bib firmly in a mass of solder; but this, while insuring that the cock is held firmly, is open to objection in consequence of the time and labor involved, the considerable loss of heat, waste of solder, and the liability of the melted metal thus temporarily applied to stick to some point and deface the cock. No ordinary form of clamp or vise is well adapted for this work, because of the great variety of positions in which the work must be set. The lead pipe and cocks cannot be carried to the bib-holder, but the bib-holder must be brought to the place required.
I have devised a cheap instrument adapted to hold the bib in a variety of positions relatively thereto, to sieze and release with facility, and to hold the bib firmly. It is also adapt ed to be secured firmly and very rapidly to a floor, bench, or other wood-work.
The following is a description of what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention. The accompanying drawing forms a part 'of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of my device, with a bib in position for soldering in each pair of the clamps, though, in practice, both will be very seldom used at the same time.
Similar letters of referenceindicate like parts in both the figures.
A represents a floor of wood; 13, the main body of my device; and b b I) represent legs which are firmlyfixed thereto and form part of the same. Two of the legs are pointed and adapted to be instantly set in the fioor by one or more blows on the upper end of the body B. Another leg is adapted to be held by a screw, E. There may be an additional point in the third leg to be secured by a blow upon the foot before the screw is inserted. O D are the bases or fixed portions of two pairs of clamps. The hinged part of each is represented, respectively, by O D and the hinge of each is represented by c d. The clamps are properly formed to seize a round object, and the parts are compressed together by the screws G H, so as to take a firm hold on a cock of any ordinary size which is inserted therein. M represents a cock in position in the clamps (l C. It is held tightly by pressure exerted by the screw G. N represents a similar cock in position in the clamp D D It is held firmly in position by the force of the screw H. In each figure a lead pipe to which the cock is to be soldered is represented by P.
In the operation of my device the solder is applied and the joint is wiped in the ordinary manner. So soon as the solder is sufficiently cool the hold on the cock is relaxed by slackening the pinching-screw G or H and then by a few turns to relax the holding-screw E, the entire device is ready to be detached from the floor and shifted rapidly into a new position, where it is again secured by the same means. The strain tending to move the device is greatest during the period while the joint is being wiped. When the joint is completely formed and it is left to cool there .is very little or no strain on my bib-holder tending to disturb its position. The screw E may with tolerable safety be removed during theperiodwhile the workman is waiting for the joint to cool. In case the bib is highly polished it may be expedient to interpose leather or other soft material between it and the clamps. Silver-plated bibs especially-require such care. I propose to have at hand several soft pieces of material of different thicknesses for the purpose of attaining this end and also adapting the device more fully to different sizes of cocks. Thick checks of hard metal may be used either with or without a soft lining to enable the clamps to better hold very small cocks.
In the drawing the cockN is a half-inch cock, while the cock M is largersay five-eighths. The cock N is held by the aid of a check, D which partially fills the space provided in the clamps, as will be understood. The check I) is laid aside when the clamp is to. hold a larger cock, it being easily removed after taking out the holding-screw al provided as shown. When the cheek D is in use and when the entire device is being transported or stored the screw (1 holds the cheek D in place and guards against its displacement and loss. Each pair of the clamps is tapped to receive the screw d and the cheek D applies equally well to each. The cheek may, therefore, be changed from one to the other at short notice, according as either pair of clamps is required to hold a large or small cock.
I claim as my invention- 1. The within-described bib-holder, having means for firmly taking hold around the bib,
