Be it known that 'I, 'EARLEY R. BALns, a
i citizen of the United States. residing at Na pertains to make and use the dine, in the county of Eddy and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmill-Pump Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apsame.
This invention relates to improvements in windmill pump regulators, and one ofthe 1 principal objects of the invention is the proupper end of the vision of a simple, durable and efficient regulator that will relieve the piston rod of jar upon the downward stroke.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of the in vention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in
which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower portion of a windmill'frame, showing the pump cylinder and the lower end of the pump piston rod, and showing the improved regulator associated with the pump,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the regulator removed from operative position,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the regulator shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken through the center of the regulator.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the letter A designates a portion of a windmill frame, B a pump cylinder, and C a pump piston rod, which is operated by the windmill. I
The regulator is shown as consistingof a substantially rectangular shaped plate 1, whieh'is positioned at the upper end of the cylinder B and has one of its longitudinal edges provided with a cutout portion 2 that is of semicircular configuration and receives aportion of the periphery of the upper end of the pump cylinder. A clamp 3 of substantially semicircular configuration en' gages over the remainder of the periphery of the pump cylinder B and has its opposite ends provided with flanges 4 which engage against the adjacent longitudinal edge of the plate 1 and aresecured to the plateby means of fastening bolts 5,- which extend through the flanges, a and the plate 1 and tangular ings formed in the I tween the plates 1 and 7, and encircling the rods 14, are coiled Patented oct. 22, 1918.

have nuts 6 turned thereon and adjustable against the opposite longitudinal edgeof the plate 1, so as to secure the clamping-element 3 in operative position. A second recplate 7 is associated with the piston rod C, and has one of the longitudinal edges thereof provided with a semicircular cutout portion 8 for receiving a portion of the periphery of the rod C, and a clamping element 9 is mounted on the mentioned longitudinal edge of the plate 7 and is providedwith a semidircular cutout portion 10, which engagesover the remaining portion of the periphery of the rod C, and the said clamping element 9 is provided with a pair of outwardly extending flanges which engage against the adjacent longitudinal edge of the plate 7 and are secured to the plate by'means of transversely extending bolts 11 which pass through the flanges and the plate I and nuts 12 are turned on the rear endsof the bolts 11 and are adjustable against the adjacent longitudinal edge of the plate 7, so as to secure the clamping element 9 in operative position. The plate 7' accompanies the piston rod C in its movement. The plate 7 operates between pairs of guide rods 13, which are located, respectively, adjacent opposite ends of the plate 1. The plate 1 is also provided with a pair of vertically extending rods 14, which are in.- terposed between the pairs of rods at the opposite ends of the plate 1 and the upper ends of the rods 14 slidably extend through openplate 7. Interposed besprings 15. Upon the downward movement of the plate 7, the springs 15 will be compressed and offer resistance to the descent of the plate 7 and also the piston rod C, thereby relieving the windmill of a large portion of the weight of the rod C, and also preventing the withdrawal of the rod 0 upon its downward movement. Upon the upward movement of the plate 7, the springs 15 will be released and in return.- ing to normal position will efiect a lift on the plate 7, thereby assisting in the raising of the rod 0-.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I. claim is:-
1. In combination, a pump cylinder, a.
piston rod, a plate provided with a recess opening out through one side edge thereof for the reception of a portion of the pump cylinder, a clampsecured to said side edge of the plate and embracing the pump cylinder to secure the plate thereto, a second plate having a recess opening out through one side edge thereof for the reception of a portion of the piston rod, a clamp secured to said edge of the second plate and embracing the piston rod to secure the second plate thereto, rods carried by the first plate and slidably extending through openings in the second plate, and springs mounted upon the rods between the p ates.
In combination, a pump cylinder, a piston rod, a rectangular plate having a re cess opening-out through one side edge thereof for the reception of a portion of the pump cylinder, a curved clamp secured to said side edge of the plate and embracing the pump cylinder to secure the plate thereto, a-second rectangular plate provided with i a reeex opening out through one side edge thereof for the reception of a portion of the piston rod, a curved clam secured to said side edge of thesecond piate and em bracing the piston rod to secure the second plate thereto, said second'plate being of less width than the first plate and provided with openings, rods carried by the first plate and slidably extending through the openings in the second plate, springs mounted upon the rods between the plates, and pairs of guide rods carried by the first plate, the guide rods of each pair being relatively spaced and engaging the opposite side edges of the second plate.
