; plosion cham Be'it known that LWlLLIAM GRIKSCEEIT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the'county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain' 'n'ew'and usefulImprovements in Priming-Cocks, of which the fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
he invention relates to primers for internal combustion engines, and it is the object of the invention to facilitate the injection of the priming charge directly into the cylinder or explosion chamber. In the present state of the art it is usual to provide priming cups adapted to receive a predetermined quantity of the liquid fuel which is subsequently discharged into the cylinder upon the opening of the valve. In use, one or more of the cylinders of the engine usually contains a compressed charge which when the valve is opened will blow out through the liquid, interfering with its passage into the cylinder. It also frequently happens that the passage becomes clogged with carbon so that it is diificult or impossible to introduce the. priming fluid. With my improvement I dispense with the cup, thereby reducing the amount of metal required and the cost of the fitting, and also provide means for directly in ecting the priming fluid from an oil can or other container. The construction is further one in which the passage into the cylinder or exber may be readily cleaned from carbon deposit,tand by inserting the spout of the can or container into this passage the fluid may be forced inward under pressure.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the construction; 7
Fig. 2 is a through;
Fig. 3 illustrates the arrangement of the cock when placed on the side of the en 'ne cylinder and the manner of forcing the uid therethrough.
A is a fitting provided with the threaded nipple B, the polygonal portion G and the portion D beyond said polygonal portion having a lateral enlargement E. F is a bore extending longitudinally of the fitting and forming at one point therein a conical valve seat G; H is a bore at an oblique angle to longitudinal section there- Specification of Least-Para; Application-filed December 6,1917;- Serial No. 205,713.
following is a speci- Patentedo oughthe enlargement E and having a flaring mouth portion L The bores F and H intersect each "other above the conical seat G, so that both may be closed by a single needle-valve J. This is the bore F, passing thr formed with a' threaded stem K engaging a threaded portion of the bore F, as shown.
In machining the fitting the bore F with the conical seat therein'may be formed by a single tool, and in the same manner the bore with the flaring portion I may be machined by a single too This will simplify and cheapen the manufacturing cost.
In use, the fitting is engageable either with a vertical aperture in the engine casing, (not shown) when the valve is disposed vertiin Fig. 1, or with a horizontal aperture when disposed horizontally, as shown in Fig. 3; or it could be engaged with an aperture at any angle between these two extremities. ppsitions the flaring mouth I of the aperture that'the spout of an oil can may be readily inserted thereinto and the conical or funnel-shaped wall will form a guide for directing the spout into the smaller aperture. Thus th forcing it into the aperture H and then indirectly into the cylinder. If at any time when the engine is running it is desired to open the cock this may be done without danger of contact with the hot exhaust gases, as the direction of the oblique bore valve. It will be observed that the two intersecting bores F and H together form a Y-shaped Y being be- In each of these several,
is such as to clear the handle of the bore for directing a filling spout directly thereinto.
2. A priming cock, comprising a fitting having a threaded nipple a portion exten ing outwardly therefrom With a laterallyextending portion having an obliquely-extending outer face, a bore extending through said fitting axially of said nipple and having a valve seat therein, a bore extending through said laterally-extending portion at an angle to: said first-nientioned bore and in terseeting the same above said seat, said lastmentionecl bore being substantially perpendicular to said oblique face, and a Gopies this patent ma naeaovi mouth portion for saiciebh ue bore for directing a filling spout directly thereinto.
S. A priming cock, compri ing a fitting having a threaded nipple With a passage extending axially therethrough and an oblique passage intersecting the same, a valve-stem engaging said first-mentioned passage and adapted to be seated beyond the inner portion of said oblique passage, and means for guiding a filling spout directly into said oblique passage.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
