Description

)ITTORNEY- VWILKEHS'ON.
Thread-Cutter and Thimble Combined.
.4 un 5 w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BASIL M. WILKERSON, OF TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-CUTTERS AND THIMBLES COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,195, dated June 18, 1872; antedated June 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BASIL M. WILKERSON, of Tuscaloosa, in the county of Tuscaloosa v and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Thread-Gutter and Thimble thimbles, for cutting off, and by the act of cutting, at the same time pointing or sharpening the end of the thread for inserting in the eye of the needle.
My invention consists in a peculiar threadcutting plate applied to a thimble, the plate having all its exposed edges blunt, and its cutting-edges formed by cutting or filing trans versely to one edge and at an angle to the face of the plate, a nick or notch, the length and depth of which are greater upon the side at which the thread enters than upon the opposite side, the nick on one side of the plate being in the form of a gradually-taperin g angular groove, terminating at the edge of the plate in two minute sharp cutting-edges which meet at an angle, such edges and angle being at that part where the groove is cut entirely through the plate.
The drawing is a perspective view of my improved thimble. A is an ordinary thimble.
.B is my improved steel-plate let into a notch in the side flush with the inner surface and secured by a screw, or in any other way. Said plate has a notch and groove, constructed as above stated, and having the walls beveled, so that the cutting-edge is flush with the inner surface, or thereabout. The plate is not so thick or the notch so deep but that the thread can be pressed on the cutting-edges by the thumb pressing against the surface of plate B. The thimble is worn with the notch frontin g the thumb the thread is laid in the groove and pressed inward against the edges of the cutter by the thumb of the hand on which the thimble is, and pulled by the other hand against the cutter, in such manner as to be cut off and trimmed obliquely onthe two opposite sides of p the thread, forming a tapered point, which will enter the eye of the needle readily. These cutters may be attached to sewin gmachines, spools, 850.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The thread cutting plate B, having its exposed edges blunt and its cuttingedges formed by cutting or filing transversely to a blunt edge, and at an angle to the face of the plate a nick or notch, the length and depth of which are greater at the side at which the thread enters than at the opposite side, and operating to taper or sharpen the thread in the act of cutting it, substantially as described.
BASIL M. W'ILKERSON.
