Be it known that I, ARTHUR NEWHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 1019 Southgate street, in the city of Victoria, Province of British Columbia,
lDominion of Canada, have invented certain `new andl useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in relief valves, with particular reference to those used in steam engine cylinders for the opening and closing of the vdrain pipes of such cylinders, and the object of the invention is to provide a valve of this character which is adapted to be maintained, under normal conditions of operation, in the drain-pipe closinoa position by the pressure of the steam in t e steam chest or main but which, when acted upon by an abnormal increase of pressure within the cylinder due to water therein, will automatically overcome the steam pressure holding it Closed, and open so that the' water be discharged through the drain pipe and thel abnormal pressure relieved, thus effectually preventing accident tothe machinery arising from such a cause.
The invention consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the casing having alined inlet and outlet ports 10 and 11 having screw threaded engagement with conduits 12 and 13 which lead respectively to the engine cylinder and to the drainer or condenser. The pipe 12 may be formed of several branches or a plurality of ports 10 may be provided by which a number of cylinders may be connected to the casing at the same time. The ports 10 and 11 Connect respectively with ports 14 and 15, formed by dividing the interior of the casing by an intercepting. partition or web 16, the ports being of the shape.
shown in Fig. 2, being separated by the partition 16a, and being controlled by a reciprocable disk valve 17 normally held open by a spring 18 which presses against the stem 19, the stem reciprocating in a cylindrical guide-way 20 forming part of the casing, the tension of the spring being, conveniently adjusted by a set screw 21 eX- tending through the casing follower plate 22 at the end of the spring.V
In its open position the valve 17 is designed to abut projecting lugs 23 on a cap 24 which closes an aperture or port 25 in the casi-ng. The cap is itself formed with aport or opening 26 to which a pipe 27 is connected which leads to the steamchest or other part of the engine which is supplied with steam when the engine is operating. rlhe valve 17 is designed to reciprocate in a cylindrical eX- tension 28 and by- pass ports 29 and 30 are formed at the side of the cylindrical eX- tension permitting the steam chest toV drain around the valve when open.
Tov provide for the removal of dirt and scales from the interior of the casing, d-rainage ports 31 and` 32 may be provided, normally closedv by set screws 33v and 34. The top of the cap may be formed with a hexagonal nut 35 by which the same may be screwed on and unscrewed.
In operation, when the steam is ofl", the ports wil-lbe as shown in Fig. 2, when both the' engine'l andl the steam chest m-ay drain through the casi-ng to the drain pipe 13, thus permitting the water condensation to drainl off.Y the steam ison, the valve 17 is: seated under its pressure closing the ports 14 and 15 and cutting off communication between the cylinder and the drain and also between the steam chest and the drain.
On an abnormal increase of pressure taking place in the cylinder due to water therein being compressed between the piston and the end of the cylinder, the water will be forced down the drain pipe 12 into ports 10 and 11i and, being intercepted by the partition 16, will be directed with its full force on that area of the valve face 17 which eX- tends above the partition and, as the total pressure per square inch on the valve on its drain-pipe side will then be greater than the and abutting a ioo total pressure on its steam side, it willv readily be seen that the steam pressure holding the valve closed will be overcome so that it will be opened by the water pressure, thus allowing the water to escape through ports 15 and 11 so that the abnormal pressure is relived before it can effect any damage, when the valve will again be closed by the normal steam pressure.
ln the modified form of the invention vshown in Fig. 5 the compartment D is divided into a plurality of compartments sepa- -rated by secondary webs or partitions 16b and 16c extendingl from the main web to the walls of the valve casing and each of these secondary compartments thus formed would have a connection or inlet port 10, 10b7 10c, and in this way a number of cylinders would be connected to one valve.
Each of these secondary webs 161 and 16c would form a valve seat so that when the ,valve was closed they would all be' closed and not only separated from the lower compartment but from each other.
As many changes could be made in the above construction vand many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
That I claim as my invention is:
1. A drain valve comprising` a casing having two alined ports, inlet and outlet respectively, said casing being provided with a partition dividing its interior into two parts connected respectively to the aforesaid ports, a cylindrical extension on the casing leading from the partition, a valve adapted to reciprocate in the cylindrical extension having a valve stem, said valve being normally closable on the edge of said partition by steam pressure on its steam side, and operable to overcome said pressure by excess water pressure on its opposite side, a cylindrical guide-way'for the valve stem,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the adjusting screw extending through the casing, a follower between the adjusting screw and the compression spring, a cap adapted to normally close the cylindrical extension, formed'with project-ions engaging the valve, and a steam pipe connected to the cap. A drain valve comprising a casing hav` ing two alined ports, inlet and outlet respectively, said casing being provided with a partition dividing its interior into two parts connected respectively to the aforesaid ports, a cylindrical extension on the casing leading from the partition, a valve adapted to reciprocate in the cylindrical extension having a valve stem, mally closable on the edge of said partition by steam pressure on its steam side and operable to overcome said pressure by excess water pressure on its opposite side, a cylindrical guide-way for the valve stem, a compression spring' in the guide-way, an adjusting screw extending through the casing, a follower between the adjusting screw and the compression spring, a cap adapted to normally close the cylindrical extension formed with projections engaging the valve, a steam pipe connected to the cap, a drainage port in the cylindrical extension and a set screw opening and closing the port.
3. A drain valve comprising a valve casing having inlet and outlet drain openings and a steam inlet opening, an intercepting partition within said casing, the said partition dividing the interior of the casing into two chambers of unequal size and its edge forming a valve seat, a valve mounted for reciprocating within said casing andv adapted to seat under steam pressure, on the edge of the partition to close communication between the said chambers, projections engaging the valve in its outward movement, and spring means for unseating the valve when the steam pressure is relieved.
