Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS W. HEMP AND JOHN Z. SKINNER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,144, dated J une 18, 1872.
. and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The chief object of this invention is to add greater strength and durability to top and body of circular oil and similar cans, and adapting same for shipping and transportation purposes. The nature of our improvement consists, first, in providing the body of cans with peculiarly-formed and connected sheet metal hoops; secondly, in combining with a can having a corrugated top certain detail features, and providing its body with metallic hoops, in manner now to be more fully described.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use our said invention, we'will now more fully describe the same, referring to Figure 1 as a sectional elevation, to Fig. 2 as a perspective view.
The body A is formed and joined as usual and provided with bottom. The top a is formed conical or similar shaped, having corrugations a as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Said corrugated top a can be made of one piece, and provided with nozzle a. a is the vent. The corrugated top or cover is otherwise properly fitted, joined, and soldered to body A of the can. It is evident the corrugations a prevent deflection on top or cover, and add great strength and durability to same. To further strengthen the body A the same is hooped by sheet-metal hoops B. Said hoops B are formed hollow or bulging outward at b, and having shoulders 12 each side. The hoops B are next secured in clamps 12 which are sim ply slipped underneath hoops and soldered to body of can, (see Fig. 1,) the connecting-ends of the hoops being riveted. By means of the hoops B protection is offered to the body of can, adding strength to same, so as to dispense with wooden boxes, and otherwise advantages are secured readily apparent.
The construction here shown is applicable for forming sheet-metal barrels, milk-cans, and similar purposes.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim is- 1. The hoops B, formed hollow, and having side-shoulders b secured in clasps b and arranged to strengthen and add durability to cans A, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improvedoil-can A, formed with a corrugated-top, at, having nozzle a vent a and further having its annular body strengthened'by hoops B, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of said invention we have hereunto set our hands.
