To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPPA H. RYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful VVeft-Replenishing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to weft replenishing mechanism and particularly to improved devices for actuating the transferrer member by which the fresh weft carrier is inserted.
In weft replenishing mechanism of the usual type the transferrer arm is positively actuated by the. lay. Such actuation necessitates the completion of the act of transfer by the time the lay reaches its front center, as no power can be derived from the lay during its rearward movement. This construction therefore confines the transfer op eration within very narrow time limits. Furthermore the positive actuation of the transferrer arm not infrequently causes damage by its unyielding action when the insertion of the fresh weft carrier is for any reason obstructed.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide improved means for actuating the transferrer member so designed that the act of transfer may continue as the lay begins its rearward movement. A further object of my invention is to provide means for yieldingly actuating the transfer mechanism so that damage caused by obstructed transfer may be avoided or materially reduced. I
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mechanism, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of certain parts of the mechanism taken along the line .22 in Fig. 1.
I have shown my improved mechanism as combined with a multi-color magazine 10 of a usual type. The magazine is mounted upon the loom frame 11 and is positioned to permit the transfer of fresh weft carriers to a shuttle 12 carried by a lay 13 supported by swords 14, all of the usual type.

stud the hub or sleeve 16 of the transferrer member 17 is pivotally supported. An arm 18 is also formed integral with the sleeve 16 and extends toward the front of the loom. The sleeve 16 is retained in position on the stud by a collar 19 which may be secured by a cotter pin as shown.
F or actuating the transferrer member 17 I provide a toggle comprising two links 20 and 21 pivotally connected together by a stud 22. The lower link 20 is also pivotally connected by a stud 23 to the arm 18, and the upper link 21 is pivotally connected by av stud 2 1 to a fixed projection on the magazine 10. The links 20 and 21 are provided with cooperating lugs or stops 25 and 26 adapted when engaged to hold the toggle in the normal position shown in Fig. 1. A tension spring 27 is connected at its upper end to the stud 24 for the link 21 and at its lower'end to a stud 28 fixed in an offset pro ection at the lower end of the link 20. The spring 27 yieldingly retains the toggle in the normal position shown 111 Fig. 1 with the stops 25 and 26 operatively engaged. When the links are in this position the transferrer member is in its raised or inoperative position' For breaking thetoggle and giving the transferrer its initial operative movement I provide an arm 30 loosely mounted upon the sleeve 16 and engaging aroll 31 upon the end of the toggle pivot or stud 22. The arm 30 is provided with a depending portlon 32 to which is pivotally secured a latch 33. This latch is of the usual type and is commonly made in two parts with pro yision for adjustment as shown in the drawings.
A vertically movable rod 34 controlled by transfer indicating mechanism of the usual type (not shown) engages the latch 33 and is effective to raise the latch into the path of the usual bunter 35 carried by the lay 13. lVhen the latch is engaged by the hunter the arm 30 is moved to the right (in Fig. 1) carrying with it the roll 31 and thus breaking the toggle formed by the links 20 and 21. After the toggle is broken the spring 27 will draw the pivot 23 of the link 20 toward the pivot 24 of the link 21, the toggle members moving toward the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. Such movement of the toggle raises the pivot 23 and arm 18 and correspondingly depresses the transferrer member 17 thereby causing the insertion of a fresh weft carrier in the shuttle.
It will be noted that the initial movement of the transferrer arm is a positive movement caused by the hunter 35 and transmitted through the latch 33, the arm and the toggle links 20 and 21. After the lay reaches its front center, however, the movement of the transferrer is continued under the influence of the toggle spring 27. It is therefore not necessary to fully complete the act of transfer during the forward movement of the lay, and it thus becomes possible to correspondingly delay the engagement of the bunter with the latch 33. Such delay of engagement is advantageous as it permits a later revoking of the transfer if for any reason the shuttle is misplaced in the shuttle box.
For resetting the transfer mechanism, I provide the transferrer arm 17 with an extension 17, inclined downwardly and rearwardly and positioned for engagement by the shuttle boX or other portion of the lay, as the lay moves rearwardly after a transfer.
Such engagement raises the transferrer 17 and depresses the arm 18 and stud 23 thus straightening the toggle and stretching the Copies of this patent may be obtained for spring 27. The spring 27 acting upon the off-set stud 28, causes the toggle members to continue their movement past the dead center until the lugs 25 and 26 engage and the parts are again in normal position.
Having thus described my invention, it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is 1. In a Weft replenishing mechanism, a transferrer member, positively actuated weft-controlled means to give said member its initial transferring movement, and additional' resilient means effective to complete said movement independently of said positive means.
2. In a weft replenishing mechanism, a
transferrer member, means to give said member an initial transferring movement as the lay moves forward, and means to continue said movement independently of the lay after the lay has reached its front center.
3. In a weft replenishing mechanism, a transferrer member, means to give said member a positive initial transferring move ment, and actuating devices effective to com plete the transferring movement independently of said means after said means has become inoperative.
1. In a weft replenishing mechanism, a transferrer member, a toggle normally holding said member in inoperative position, a spring effective to hold said toggle in said normal position, and weft-controlled means to break said toggle, said spring being thereafter effective to actuate said member to complete the transfer of the weft carrier.
5. In a weft replenishing mechanism, a transferrer member, a toggle normally holding said member in inoperative position, a spring effective to give said transferrer member an operative movement when said toggle is broken, and weft-controlled means for breaking said toggle.
' 6. In a weft replenishing mechanism, a transferrer member, a toggle normally holding said member in inoperative position, an actuating spring for said transferrer, and means to break said toggle, said means comprising a pivotally mounted arm engaging said toggle, a latch connected to said arm, a hunter on the lay, and weft-controlled means to move said latch into the path of said bunter.
7. A weft replenishing mechanism, comprising a transferrer member, weft-controlled means for yieldingly' actuating said member to transfer a weft carrier, and means to reset said mechanism, said latter means comprising an extension of the transferrer member positioned after a transfer for actuation by the lay onits rearward movement,
