Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ALLEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
METAL-POLISH.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Metal-Polish, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compositions for coating the surface of articles of iron or steel with carbon, preferably in the form of lamp-black or graphite, and its object is to .-'used. The proportions of graphite and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application filed December 7, 1917. Serial No. 205,945.
' lamp-black may be varied if-desired. This paste is applied to the surface of iron or steel, and when dry is rubbed or brushed. The phosphoric acid or the acid salts of phosphoric acid attack the iron or steel, forming phosphates of iron which adhere to the iron, and particles of the carbon intermingled with the phosphates are united to the metal by these phosphates. When dry, the surface maybe rubbed with parafiin oil to brighten the finish.
I claim 1. A metal polish consisting of finely divided graphite and lamp black and sufficient dilute phosphoric acid 'to form a thin'paste.
2. A metal polish consisting of sixteen parts by weight of graphite, three parts by weight of lamp-black and sufficient dilute phosphoric acid to form a thin paste.
3. A metal polish consisting of finely divided graphite and lamp-black and suflicient dilute acid compound of phosphorus to form a thin paste.
WILLIAM H. ALLEN.
