Abstract

Compositions for coating metal substrates comprise an aqueous dispersion of polytetra-fluoroethylene, substantially free from chromium compounds, and a phosphoric acid or ammonium salt thereof in amount of 2 to 10% weight/volume (gram/millilitre) based on the volume of the liquid phase of the dispersion. The phosphoric acid may be orthophosphoric acid, and preferred salts are the di- and triammonium phosphates, e.g. mixtures of diammonium phosphate with ammonia. The dispersions may also contain pigments and fillers, and may be used to coat metals, e.g. metal cooking utensils or blanks from which cooking utensils may be formed. Examples describe aqueous dispersions of polytetrafluoroethylene containing (1 to 3) diammonium phosphate and (4) orthophosphoric acid.ALSO:Metal substrates are coated with compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoro-ethylene free from chromium compounds, and a phospheric acid or ammonium salt thereof in amount of 2 to 10 per cent weight/volume (gram/millilitre) based on the volume of the liquid phase of the dispersion. Specified metals are aluminium and alloys thereof, copper, brass phosphor-bronze and steel, e.g. in the form of cooking utensils or blanks from which such utensils may be formed. The preferred phospheric acid is orthophospheric acid, and specified salts are di- and triammonium phosphates, e.g. mixtures of diammonium phosphate with ammonia. One or more coats of polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion free from the phosphorus compounds may be applied over the prime coat, each coat being dried and sintered before further application. Examples describe the application to aluminium blanks of compositions comprising polytetrafluoroethylene and (1 and 2) diammonium phosphate and (4) orthophosphoric acid; and to aluminium alloy, copper, brass, phosphor-bronze and steel sheets of compositions comprising (3) polytetrafluoroethylene and diammonium phosphate.
