In the prcferred embodiment 01' this invention, the body 1 of the cum is of generu1ly cylindricul formution us shown in Figs. 1 und 2. In the working fuce 0f the body 1, the Iutter is formed with u cumwuy 01 guidewuy of' speciul configurution, suid cumwuy embodying u generully unnular vu1vc closing run 01' pmtion 2, u vu1ve opening run 01' nortion 3, un oblique connecting pussuge 4 between the runs 2 und 3, und unother oblique pussuge 5 connecting Sa'id runs 1 und 2.

The switch 6 is hold ut eithcr limit of its movement by meuns of u spring 14 Which is of the bowed type, one end thereof being connected ut 15 to the switch und the other end thereof being connected ut 16 to u fixed point of the body 1. 'Ihe points of uttuchment 15 und 16 u1e so urrunged with respect t0 the pivot 7 of the switch 6 thut when the switch is in the position in Fig. 1, the point 15 lies on the innen side of i;he imuginury line druwn through the points 7 und 16. 1Vhen the switch is in its other position us shown in F ig. 3, the point 15 lies ut the outer side of an imuginury line druwn through the points 7 und 16. Therefore the spring 14 acts to hold tlie switch 6 in the position shown in either 01? suid figures.
The body 1 of the cum is mounted fast on u cum shuft 17 und is shown us connected thereto by meuns of u key 18.

The pussuge 5 cuuses the valve to be shifted to un 0pen position by cuusing the roller 10 to move from thc 1'11n 2 into the run 3. The pussage 4 cuuses the roller to move from the mm 3 buck into the run 2 thereby closing the valve. During the tw0 rev1olutio1is 0f th crzmk shaft und the czun shaft, the roller 10 occupies the 1u11 2 f01 approximately 0ne and one-half revolutions 01 the crank shaft and said roller occupies the 1'111). 3 f0r approximately one-half 0f 'the revolutions of the crank shaft. Thus the valve is opened and sustained in an open positiononce in each two complete revolutions of the crank shaft which is necessary to the proper operation of a four cycle internal combustion engine.
'Ihe body 1 is formed With a recess 19 t0 recei've the ftee extremity 0f the arm 8 when the latter moves outwardly und the body is alse cut away to form a recess 20 for the projection 12 when the switch 6 is in the position shown in Fig. 2.

In a multiple cylinder env gine embodying an inlet and exhaust valve f01 each cylinder, a considerable a mount of load is thus taken from the czun shaft 17 mental ortion extending not 110 exceed one hundred and eighty degrla'es, a sWitch pi'votal1y mounted in one of said connecti1'1g passages and hm ing a projection adapted 130 extend into the annular portion 0f the 1un and alsohaving a projection adapted t0 extend int0 the segmentzml portion of -the um, and means f0r yieldingly sustainihgsaicI switch in either osition t0 direct a valve actuating member alternately into the 2m- 111112u run and the segmental run, whereby the engine valve is opened only once in two revolutions 01 the engine shaft.
