Links for Chains, of which the following is a specification.
The invention seeks to provide, as its principal object, an open link adapted for replacing a broken link of a chain, such as skid chain and the like so that a broken chain may be easily repaired and placed in service.
A still further object is to provide an open link and a closure member for the opening, the closure member being so designed with reference to the link that it may be effectively attached thereto by a screw or rivet.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture. 7
Still further and other objects will be made to appear as the invention is set forth in detail in the following description.
The drawings illustrate and the specifica-' tion describes a particular embodiment of the invention but to this embodiment it is not to be restricted. Continued use in practice may make manifest certain desirable changes or alterations and the right is re served to make any which do not deviate from the scope of the subjoined claim.

Referring to the drawings, the link is shown as comprising a longitudinal section 1 at either end of which there is a circular return bend 2. the ends of these return bends being formed in circular bends 3 whose radii is less than the radii of the bends 8. The free ends 4 of the circular bends 3 stand vertical with reference to the longitudinal section 1. The open link thus comprises the straight section and the bends just referred to and it is designed to be made preferably of steel which is circular in cross section.

two closure members 5 which are adapted to close the opening between the two end portions 4 of the link. These closure members are made preferably fromflat pieces of steel which are square in plan. Adjacent one edge the stock ofthe plate is pressed'to form a semi-circular depression 6 which is adapted to partially surround the longitudinal section 1 of the link. Adjacent the other edge, the stock of the plate is pressed to form the depressions 7 which are semi-circular in cross section and arcuate in plan to conform to the end portions 4 and to the adjacent portions of the bends 3. Each of the clamping members 5 is provided with a centrally disposed hole 8. The two members are attached one on either side of the link so that the longitudinal section 1 lies in the semicircular depression 6 and the end portions 4 and the adjacent portion of the circular bends 3 lie in the depressions 7. The two closure members thus operate to completely surround those portions of the link when they are attached thereto and the holes 8 of the two register with each other and are adapted to receive a rivet 9 which, after being inserted through the holes is suitably peened over.
The device is intended primarily as a repair link for chains, so that the latter may be conveniently and effectively repaired. The device is intended to be carried for repair purposes unassembled. In the event the chain should break and a quick repair thereof is necessary the broken link may be removed whereupon the ends of the chain, left by the breaking of the link. may be attached to the open link, the opening between the two said end portions 4 providing for an easy attachment of the ends of the chains to this link. After these ends have been attached to the open link, the two clamping members 5 are attached one on either side thereof and the rivet 9, after insertion through the holes 8. is suitably peened over against one of the clamping members. The open portion of the link is thus effectivelycloscd. The free ends of the link and their manner of connecting with the clamping members is so arranged that the open link will stand a tensile strain substantially equal to the tensile strength of the material of which it is made.
