Description

J, P. ABBOTT.
Ea ve-Trough Fastening} NO.128,089. PatentedJune18, 1872.
UNIT STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JONATHAN P. ABBOTT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
lMPROVEMENT IN EAVES-TROUGH FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,089, dated June 18, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN 1?. ABBOTT, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eaves-Trough Fastenings; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows my improvement in perspective. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of my improved swivel-key; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the bridge-bar, showing the head of the swivel-key inserted.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of fastening devices used for hanging metallic cave-troughs to the caves of buildings; and it consists in an improved form of swivel-key for suspending the same to the hanger-strap, and in a wire spring for distendin g the gutter and locking the whole in place, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents an ordinary sheet-metal gutter with a bead, a, rolled in its front edge. B is a bridge-bar, which lies across the top of the gutter, with its front end turned under to embrace the roll a. The rear end of the bar is turned vertically downward on the rear side of the gutter, and carries a horizontal spur, b, which is forced through the wall of said gutter. C is a key having an elongated head, 0, at its lower end, which head is inserted through a slot, d, in the center of the bar B, in which it may be turned so as to support the bar and gutter. This much of the key is not new 5 but the remaining upper portion, and the method of attaching it to the hanger-strap, differs materially from that shown in the Letters Patent issued to me July 19, 1870, and other devices for the same purpose. The upper part of the key is formed with two dovetail lips, 6, one at each side, which embrace the lower and flared end of the hanger-strap I), which is nailed to the roof at the eaves. E is a brace made of wire, bent in the middle to embrace the neck of the key, while its ends are brought forward to the other side of the bar and bent down to press against the inner walls of the gutter and distend them, keeping them in engagement with the ends of the bridge-bar B. The key should be made of malleable metal, so that its lips e can be bent over the edges of the embraced hangerstrap. If preferred to have the key permanently attached to the bar B, it may be headed or riveted therein and cost a trifle less.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' L The key 0, when provided with the lips c e, in combination with the dovetailed end of the hanger-strap D and bridgebar B, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the key 0, hangerstrap 1), bridge-bar B, and gutter A, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
JONATHAN P. ABBOTT.
