j CAN-OPENER.
' Application filed February 25 To all whom z' may concern.' f A p 1 Be it known that 1, Louis JAKUBEG, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, (having declaredmy intention to become a citizen of the United States of America,) residing at Salem,-in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers, `of which the following is a specification.
f Thisinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in can openers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device for making circular cuts in sheet metall such as tin and so. a1?- ranged that circles of different diameters mayl be cut by the device, the same being suitable in construction and easy and inex-l pensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hand implement arranged for `cutting circular openings of different diameters in the ends of tin cans for `gaining access to the interior of 'the can, the device possessing great strength and durability. I
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken through the device with the handle broken away and the pivot member illustrated by dotted lines in its adjusted position. Y
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View thereof,
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views of the same taken upon lines III-III, IV-IV, V-V and VI-VI, respectively of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is aperspective view of the free end portion of the shaft portion of the dev1ce,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the point member employed and Fig. 9 is an elevational view of a modified v form of Construction partially broken away.
My device being adapted for making cir-` cular cutsl in tin bodies, the same broadly consists of a tubular shaft 10 fixedV to the end of an operating handle 11'and provided with an adjustable centering point 12 upon its free end with metal cutters 13 and 14 upon the opposite sides of the shaft and one specifieauen of Letters Patent.
ried by j reversed in its position Patentedoet; s, 71918.]l ,1918. seriainuaigo j e j y of which cutters' is yadjust-able relatively to thesaid point. f f j,
The shaft 10 is arranged with a screw 15 axially journaled therein with its inner end connected by means of a swivel 16 with the inner( end or head 17 of the shaft, which head is attached tothe handle 11 by rivets 18.
A longitudinalv side slot l9 isprovided in the shaft 10 at the side thereof opposite the cutter or blade 13 andthepoint 12 ,has an attaching sleeve 2O through which the screw 15 is journaled, opposite projecting lugs 21 andv 22y being if carried by the sleevey 20 yfor seating within the adjacent end' of the sloty 19 and an oppositely arranged notch 23 kprovided inthe end of the shaft 10.
A `locknut 24 is threaded upon the screw lputwardly ofthe sleeve 20 for locking the partstogether` preventing the screw 15 from rotating The movable cutter or blade 14 is vprovided with a collar 25 slidably arranged within the shaft 10 and threaded upon the screw 15 for longitudinal movement` during the turning of the screw by means of a handle 26 carthe outer free end of the screw.
The cutter 14 is shaped substantially like an arrow head having a neck 27 slidably arranged within the slot 19. During the operation of the device, the point 12 and cutter 1 3 may be employed for cutting a circle of a radius equal to the distance between the point 12 and the cutter 13, the point 12 being punched'through the'work such as tin and a handle 11 employed for revolving the shaft 10 around the point 12 as a center with thel cutter 13 cutting through the tin. Y f
When it is desired to cutY a circle having a kradius of a different length from that just described, the nut 24 is turned and moved outwardly upon the screw 15, releasing the sleeve 20 and permitting the point 12 to be to that illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. lof the drawing. The point 12 will then be in a position for cooperating with the adjustable cutter 14 which cutter is adjusted for cutting 'a circle of the desired diameter by moving the screw 15 by means of its handle 26 for feeding the cutter 14 longitudinally of the shaft 10. When the cutter 14 is properly positioned, the nut 24 is tightened upon the sleeve 2O during the operation of the device.
- 13 and 14 handle tonsvwhli .would usually employaf plu ;y
rality ofidifferent sized openers.
In the modified form of the invention shown in: Eig. 9, a shaft 10 is provided fixed upon a'ha-ndle'- l1 the shaft. A'polntmember :12 is carried by" a threaded' terminal4k portion 1'5"v ofl the shaft 10 the Shaft' said; cutters While lockV nuts 24" arecarried by t-heterminal'port-ion.15y for locki'ngthe point member 12" in either ofl its opposite sitions.- The 'operation of this forni of 51e device will be apparent, the cutters being serviceable selectively With the point member 12jivhen positioned upon the side of'v thesha'ft 10? `v`adj acentsuch cutter.
` What 13 claim as nevv.is f
1,V A can opener including a shaft, a rigid vvith the shaft, a, centering point adjacent the Yfree endjof" the shaftQre.V versible in position fronr one side to the for positioning at either side of other side of the. shaft, and cutters carried;
