To an whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HAKuLro GH HAQHI TANABE, a citizen of the Japanese Empire, residing at Marysville, inthe county of Yuba and State of California, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Window- Seats, of whichthe following is a specification. q a
This invention relates to a Window seat which is capable of being removably secured to the outside. of a window and aims to provide a device which may be quickly and easilyfconverted into va rocking chair.
' The primary object of the inventionis to provide an article, capable of the above set forth uses, which may be easily and quickly folded into a compact form when not in use.
The invention. also comprehends the novel form of supporting means pivoted to the platform which supports a seat,the1supporting .means being adapted for contact beneath the window and being capable of having its contacting end removably secured to the front of the platform, whereby the supporting means will serve as rockers. 7
The invention also provides novel means of adjusting the supporting means to adjust rthe window seat into horizontal; position,
which means consists of a flexible element carried by the supporting means and ad: justably engaging the platform.-
The invention further comprehendsa novel "form of s'eatsupportwhich is pivotally secured to the standard carried by the platform, the seat support consisting of af U- shaped frame engageable-with-the front'end oftheseat. w The invention further. consistsof the following novel details of construction and ar-' rangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described-and illustrated in the in drawings, in -whicha q igure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use as a window seat; a Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the same getached from engagement with the win- OW I, I ,V Fig; 3 is a perspective view of the invention in use as a rockingchair; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the same folded. v x r z Referring in detail to; the 'drawings,-the numeral'lO designates a pair ofparallelside bars, preferably formed of angle iron.-
These side bars are connected together by accomp any: I
which supportsthe various parts of the combined hair and seat and by means of which the seat may be supported adjacent to the window casing.
',Pivotally secured to one end of the platform by means of a rod 12 which passes Patented Oct. 1 1918.
through the side bars 10, is a pair of stand- 'ards 13. These standards are spaced apart by an end bar 14 and an intermediate bar l5,. -the; standards being furtherbraced by cross-bars 16, one end of each of these bars being ivotally mounted upon the rod 12, while t eir opposite ends are secured to the standards 13. The ends of the standards 13 which are pivoted to the side bars 10 are curved asshown at 17, so as to space the said standards from said side bars when the device is folded, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawings. 7
\ Pivotally secured to the side bars 10 as shown at 18, are a pair of d agonally arranged braces 19, the upper bars of which are curved at the upper end as shown at 20 and pivotally mounted upon the rod 14. The bars forming the braces 19 are offset as shown at 21 and are further rovided at this ofiset point with a pivot joint 22, so, as to enable the two sections of which each of the braces is formed to be folded together when the invention is in the position shown in Fig. 4; In order to limit the movement of the-sections ofthe braces 19 in the direction opposite that shown Fig. 4, theupper section of each of the braces has secured thereto a stop member 23, consisting of a U-shaped element rigidly secured to the'said upper section and adapted to receive the upper end of the lower section whenthe, parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. 5 The offset portion 21 ofthe bars 19'forms a space for the reception of the seat 24. This seat comprises a'pair of side bars 25, each having one of their ends pivotally mounted upon the rod 15, these side bars 25 being connected by means of slats 26, which 1 together with the bars 25 form the seat 24:.
The end of the seat opposite that which is pivfotedto the'bar 15 is supported by means of a U-shaped member 27, the width of this member being such as to permit it to receive 7 the seat 24, the base of the U engaging the under side of the seat.. Theopposite end of this U shaped member is pivotally mounted upon the rod 14, so that by slightly elevatin the forward end of the seat 24, the memlier 27 may bedisengaged from the seat and folded upon the back of the stairards 13 as" shown in Figtfiof thedraw'ingsf The ends oftheside bars lO'opposite that to which the standards 13 are secured, are,
which are substantially u-shaped in. crosssection and which have pivotally mounted thereon upon the pivot '2'9-l10'oks 30, these hooks being adaptedto engage over the inside of the sill oftlie window" casii 1g='.; By pivoting the hooks ii'r-the manner-"shown they are capable of being foldedFup beneath the side bars when not iii-use a ndfar'e held in such'folded positi'on by means of hooks or-"chains 31 carried by -the sidebars 10. Secured beneaththe side barslOat' the angular connection [of the extensions 28 therewith are rubber or ot-herbuffers 32, so that the said bars will-not mar the finish of the window sill.
Pivotally mounted "upon each "endzoff the rod 12 is one of a pair of rockers 33, these rockers being formed with extensions 34 which provide short legs for the rear end of the chair." The rockers 33"are curved and carry near their opposite ends short legs; '35, which are designed tobe removably secured beneath the side bars '10'by meansofbolts 36. The front extremities of'the rockers 33 are connected by means of the rod37,these extremities being formed to have 'removably positioned thereon as shown'at 38'jand 39; a bar .40. 'This baris designed fen-engage: ment with the wall of'l-the building below the window, when the 'de vic'eis in use as a window seat. 1 1' s In order to adjust the seat toa horiiontal position when it' is connected to the win dow, the rod 37 has'se'cured thereto a fie'xible element 41, in'the form of a chainfone end ofwhich is engageable withi'a hook 43 carried by 'a rod 44 mounted beneath the front slat 11 and forming a pivot bymeans of which the side bars 10 are connected to thebars 19. ,7 Removably secured upon the rods; v 14 and 15, through the medium of fastening-device's l5 and 4:6 respectively is a bacli7', whieh is designed foruse whentheinvention is converted into a'ro'cking' chair.'- j It is believed that from'theforegoing description, when read in connectionwiththe accompanying drawings, the operationand advantages of the invention will-be appar{ ent, The right j is reserved to make such changes inthe formv and proportion-thereof-as will fallwithin-the scope of the claims hereto appended; I
