'bustion c'li amber*3, this queer biifg 'for suitable cofiiiection *okzs to d high pressure directly 'iin "p (form ofpumpiiid'caited giirhlly 2f 4; 7 One of the broad objects of the .present in' lutions of the crank ting the piston '5- of the compressor toymake rectly of the high pressures generated by the combustion of a combustible fuel inthe operation of a pump, and to achieve this purpose I utilize a form of compressor 2 shown as including a suitable cylinder within which operates a piston 6 connected by a connecting rod. 7 to a crankshaftS which may be driven by any suitable means, as, for instance, by power applied-to a fly.
wheel-9 secured appropriately tothe shaft 8; .lVhen the apparatusis used for thepur pose of utilizing the power generatedv from a combustible fuel or vapor the supply of the latter'may be derived from anysultable source and is inducted into the upper. end of the compression cylinder '5 through means of an intake valve 10. of suitable type. 011 the compression stroke of the piston 6 in the compressor a charge of fuel vapor is compressed in a suitable connecting pipe 11 J leading from the cylinder 5 into a compression, combustion, or accumulatlng chamber 12 ofthe accumulating device 3, the connection 11 preferably being provided wlth a check valve13 to-prevent the return of pressure from the chamber 12 back into, the
cylinder ofthe compressor; a I In practice after combustible fuel'has been compressed in the chamber12 to a desired degree the fuel may be ignited through the operation of any suitable igniting device .not shown and the high pressure generated therein due to the combustionof the fuel is adapted to be transferred directly to. the
pump 4: for the operation of a suitable piston therein. To provide for the control of'pressure in the combustion chamber '12, and also to provide for the control of the passage of the fluid pressure to the pump a, there is provided preferablyvin thecombustion chamber 12 a relief valve 15 which is shown as mechanically operated through means of a sultable cam or timing mechanism 16 which in the present instance is geared to the crank shaft 8' of thecompre sor by a suitable train of gears-17, shown in Fig.- 3 While'the ratio of the driving gears 17 controlling the operationof the relief valve 15 may be in any suitable proportion,
asshown in the present organization the valve 15 is opened once in each four revoshaft 8 thereby permitfour compression strokes to bring the combustible fuel to the desired degree of compression in the combustion chamber 12,
whereupon it may be ignited to cause its ex.- pansion and thus produce a high pressurein the combustion chamber whereupon the valve 15 Willbe opened and the fluid under high pressure permitted to pass from the combustion chamber directly into the pump e'where ll'flS utilized to operate the piston thereof. j
While thepresent invention contemplates the employment of the compression and pressure accumulating mechanism in. comblnation with any sultable form' of pump and with a pump which may be located at anydesired position relative to the pressure producing mechanism, in the present embodiment of the invention the pump Amay be of such a type as to be sunk toa suitable depth in a well or other source of fluid to be pumped, and in such installation the pump is connected to the combustion or high pressure chamber 3 through means of a connection as. a pipe 3'. H
The pump herein illustrated for use in connection with the compression apparatus is illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 as embodying a casing having a cylindrical outer wall 20 spaced within which there is provided an inne-r'pist'on cylinder 21 in which operates the piston 22. The pressure supply connection 3' is shown as leading'through the outer wall 20 of the casing into the upper end of the piston cylinder 21 at 23 to a point above the head of'the pistonso that the high pressure produced by the combustion of fuel gases in the high pressure chamber is led directly into the compartment Within the cylinder 2labovethe piston. When high pressure. is. admitted to the cylinder'21 through the operationiof the relief valve lo' vided at the lower end of the cylinder 21 below the piston 22, the discharged fluid passing through-the space between the inner and outer walls 21 and 20 of the'pumptas- .ing and lifting an'edu'ction valve 2 7 I suitably placed in the pump casing and herein shown as mounted onthe head of the pump and controlling the outlet of water through outlet ports 28 in said head." When the pump 4 is installed, for'instance, in a well, the natural. pressure of the water in the 7 Well may act upwardly through openings 29 in the lower head ofthepump' casing and lift a valve 30 which is slidably mounted ona valve guide pin 31 so that as the piston 22 returns by the pressure 'ofthe water outside of the the' valve 30 is opened pump casing to replace the water displaced by the downward stroke of the pump. l/Vhile the pressure of the water outside of the casing may, when passing through the inlet apertures 29 below valve 30, tend to return the piston 22, preferably the latter 1s mechanically and automatically returned through. ,a suitable means.. in the lpliesent 1 .IHSlaEtIICGiJlJlH S means-.zl'snndicatedi asilcomprglsing a spring 32 of suitable strength-mp and a; convenient tfixe'd: rportionl o f or on ithe 'cas1ng;1n the present nstance the; spring .32 resting-.1 at one end against -.Ia seats provided 1 Ion the-dipper. endLot-fthe: stem 31:.Qn; which the waive 303 is guided, the opposite rend; oi

This latter in movin downwardly under the impelling force 0 the pressure fluid is caused to pass the exhaust port 24 at a predetermined time, whereupon the pressure is relieved from above the piston 22 and this latter is returned to its upper position in the cylinder 21 through means of the automatically operating device or spring 32 which in some instances may be aided by the pressure of the fluid within the well or other position inwhich the pump may be mounted.
When the compressing apparatus is of the type designed to compress a fuel vapor and in which the latter is consumed by combustion and high pressure created, if desired the compressor 2' and the combustion or high pressure apparatus 3 may be pro-- vided with suitable water jackets as indi catecl at 2 and 3*, Fig. 4. An advantage of this type of construction is that when the pumping apparatus involves a pump structure adapted to be mounted in a Well or other position in which the pump mechanism would be located so as to causedifficulty in gaining access thereto, by the present invention one portion of the ap-- paratus may be lowered into the Well or other position, while the compressing and pressure producing mechanism may be located at a convenient position at the top of the well or other station to be readily accessible by the operator for the renewal communicationstherebetweena a 1.
