Specication of Letters Patent.
WRENCH.
Patenten oet. i, iai.
Application led April 1, 1916', Serial No. 88,382. Renewed April 15, 1918. Serial No. 228,810.
T0 all whom t may Concern.'
Be it known that I, LAURIE IsENoR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dutch Settlement, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention has relation to an improved wrench, and the nature and objects will be readily apparent to those skilled in the 'art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings;l illus,- trating what I now believe to be the preferred embodiment or mechanical expression of my invention from among forms and arrangement within the spirit thereof and the scope of the appended claim.
However, an object of the invention is to provide a wrench for use in machinery where a nut or' bolt is so situated that a wrench of the ordinary type would not be permitted to swing to any great degree, it being impossible to remove a square nut unless the handle of the wrench of the old type be permitted to swing at least 90, in order that the wrench may be removed from the nut to reapply it thereto at adjacent faces.
Incidental to the above, an object of the invention is to provide a wrench which may be applied to a nut, located as described above for turning the nut regardless of the limited space through which the handle may be permitted to swing.
Another object of the invention isto provide a wrench of the character described,
which is adapted to turn a nut around its bolt by a reciprocating motion of the wrench handle, whereby the nut is turned continuously in one direction, with means for reversing the direction of rotation of the nut so that the nut may also be loosened by the same reciprocating motion of the handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in a wrench of the character described for regulating its jaws so as to accommodate nuts and bolts of various dimensions. c
In addition to the above my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, and more particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear;
Figure 1, is a view in elevation of a wrench constructed after the manner of my invention.
Fig. 2, is a side view thereof.v
Fig. 8, is a longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. a.
Fig. 4f, is av transverse section on the line 4.-#1 of Fig. 1, and
.Fig 5, is'a horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
-My improved wrench comprises in its essentials an annularmember 1 formed in two parts which are provided with ears 2 for the reception of the bolts 3 to removably holdthe sections together. One of the members is formed with an integral handle por tion 4l and is provided with recesses 5 at each Side thereof to receive pawls 6 which are pivoted by means of transverse pins 7 secured tothe annular member.
A rotating element 8 is formed with a circumferential groove 9 in which is seated the annular member heretofore described and whereby the rotating element is loosely held for rotation. A plurality of notches 10 are formed in the rotating element and are preferably located in the groove portion therein.4 Vith reference to Fig. 3 it will be notedthat thepawls 6 are disposed in position to `engage the notches 10 of the rotating element, but is desired that only one pawl be in engaging position at a time, and to that end a ring 11 is provided around thev handle and is adapted to rest against a shoulder 12 formed on the handle. The ring 11 is formed with an upstanding arcuate portion 13 which is adapted to engage either one of the pawls 6 to retain the end thereof within the recess against the tension of the spring 14, thereby permitting the other end of the pawl to be out of engagement with the notches 10 and consequently permitting the other pawl to be engaged in the nut. It will thus be apparent by rotating the ring l1, either one of the pawls may be permitted to engage the notches in the rotating element for the purpose to be presently described.
Extending diametrically across the space inclosed by the rotating element and in spaced relation to each other are guides 15 secured at their ends to said element. Mov
able jaws 16 are held in sliding movement within the guides and are provided at their outer ends with threaded apertures 17, disposed in alinement, in which is seated a threaded element 18 having right and lefthand screw threads. Formed laterally upon the annular member l are ears 19 having alined apertures 20 to receive the ends of the threaded member 18.' One end of said threaded member is reduced and provided with screw threads 21 for engagement with the nut 22 which bears against one of the ears 19, the other end of the threaded member 18 being provided, with a kerf 23 for the reception of a screw driver or the like.
The jaws 16 are formed with stationary lugs 24 `and removable lugs 25 which are held in place by the transversely extended bolt 26. In assembling the wrenchthe jaws are inserted between the guides until the stationary lugs engage the side of the guides and the removable lugs are adjusted upon the jaws so as to engage the other sides-of the guides, then the bolt 26 is inserted in the aperture of the aws provided therefor, and the jaws are thus securely held against lateral displacement.
In operation the jaws are adjusted to accommodate the nut or bolt, and to this end a screw driver or the likeis inserted in the groove 23 of the threaded element 18 and rotated whereby the jaws maybe brought together or spread apart as the case may be.`
For securing such adjustment the nut 22 is turned to engage the ear 19 thereby locking the threaded element against rotation land consequently maintaining the jaws in their adjusted position. After such adjustment the handle 4: is reciprocated and the rotating element will be rotated either to the right or left depending upon which pawl has been placed in engagement therewith.
The wrench may be readily taken apart for cleaning or repairing by merely removing the bolts 3 whereupon the upper portion of the annular member l is released and the rotating element may be lifted out together with the jaws and all of its correlative mechanism. A
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a wrench adaptable for use in inaccessible places, and which is furthermore remarkably simple in its construction and consistent with its functions to be performed. While in my opinion-the construction of the wrench as I have illustrated it is the most efficient, nevertheless, I reserve the right and privilege of changing theV form of the details and otherwise altering the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i A wrench including a diametrically split annular member, means for detachably connecting the halves, a guide bar mounted in each half whereby when the halves are connected, the guide bars are disposed in parallelism and in `spaced relation, a handle formed on one are of the annular member, a rotatable member within said annular member, means for causing rotation of the rotatable element in one direction upon oscillation of the annular element, relatively movable jaws mounted between the guide bars, each jaw having a pair of integrally formed lugs engaging the bars at one side anda pair of detachable lugs engaging the bars at the other side and means for adjusting the jaws toward and away from each other.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
