The lower end of the rod 14 also engages the upper end of the staple former. When the latch 10 engages the cam screw 28 at the lower end of the curve 29 in which the `latch travels up and down, the staple former iS unlockedrelative to the staple driver, and the latter then moves downward alone,lthe spring 13 beingl compressed at this time and erving to yieldingly hold the staple former u the work to form a guide for the .insertion of the staple. When the staple driver and former move upward the spring lil then exiiands and moves the staple forn'ier downward on the body of -the driver, and the latch l() again brought into looking position by the springer il, whereby the parts are again in position to move downward. lt will he seen that the anvil jf/ is held in place hiv :i single screw 30, and that its other cnil is provided with a slot 3l similar to the slot 2.11, and also with a recess 32t`or when the anvil`v is reversed or turned end for end. ln this way the staple driver and the staple former are reversible to vary the length of the staples, and the anvil y is accordingly reversible, it beingr observed that the other parts operate in the desired manner regardless of whether the staple driver and staple former and anvil are turned in one dire tion or the other. ln other words, the latch 10. will operate with either end of the staple former, and the pivoted staple support 23 will work on either end of the anvil y, and thus variations in the thickness o'f the carton' blanii: are easily taken care off' without suhstitoting other parte in the machine.
The invention is not limited, of course, to the exact construction shown and described. `Wliat l claim as my invention is l.
