LABEL-DATING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
Patented Uct. 1, 1918..
Application iiled September 20, 1917. Serial No. 192,279.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN D. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Dating Machines, of which the following is a specication.l
The invention relates to label dating machines, and in certain. of its aspects more particularly to label notching machines operated by man power. y.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in Vpart hereinafter, and in part will be obvious herefrom, or mayv be ascertained through Vpractice withthe invention; the same being realized through the l pointed The invention consistsin the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described. M r j The accompanying drawings,`referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrateone embodiment of the invention, and together with the description `serve to explain the principles thereof.
`Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance -`with the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 isan end view,; looking at Fig. v1 from the left;
Fig.Y 3 is atop plan cdrresponding to Fig. 4 is a' fragmentary Adetail of a quick return device for .the label carrier. Y Y ,y
Referring by way of example to the embodiment illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, a basel is provided,which serves as a support andV guide for the traveling carriage, as well as supporting other parts of the mechanism. The upper Vportion ofthe base 1, at the top of the side walls 2 and 3, is formed into guideways 4 and` 5, which extend longitudinally along the top of the base 1. '.Theflabel-carriage 6haskits under part provided with longitudinally disposed guiding recesses formed to fit the guideways 4 ando. The guideways are shown undercut on their exterior sides, and the base of the `carriage 6 Overhan'gs the guideways4 at either side, as bestappearsfrom Figs. 2 and 3. Thus a very strong,\simple and economical construction is provided, the guideways being self cleaning and also well protected from dust, grit and other kinds of 'rt. In the embodied form of carriage, a label clamping plate 7 is preferably integral with, or attached in fixed position to, the carriage base 6. The clamping plate 7 is shown cast integral with the base 6, and with reinforcing webs or struts 8 between the clamping plate and the base. The other label clamping plate 9 is likewise supported on the base 6 and is movable on such baseto and from the plate 7, to accommodate gangs of labels :c ofvarying numbers and thicknesses. As embodied, the clamping plate 9 has a horizontally extending base 1() resting upon the top of the carriage base 6, and 'being slidable to and fro therealong.
Means are provided for holding the clamping plate 9 in fixed position upon the base 6 to rmlyclamp the labels during the marking or notching thereof. As embodied, there is provided in the carriage base 6 a T shaped slot 14, with the wider part thereof at the bottom. In said slot is a bolt ,15, with its head in the wide part of the slot and the body of the bolt extending upwardly through the slot and also through an aperture in the baselO. `The upper end of the bolt 15 is screw-threaded to take a wing nut 16. `By loosening the nut the clamping plate 9 maybe moved backwardly to receive the gang of labels and then may be moved forwardly to clamp the labels in position, the nut 16 being screwed down to hold the Aplate 9 in position.
Suitable label notching means are provided, and in the embodied form thereof the label notching means comprises a rotating saw 17, preferably located at the side of the machine. Means for rotating the saw are provided and in one aspect of the invention, connections are provided Vbetween the label carriage and saw whereby they may be driventogether, and in accordance with one feature of the invention, the power is supplied by' hand or otherwise by the operative. As embodied, the saw 17 is mounted upon and `fixed to rotate with a shaft 18, which shaft is preferably vertically disposed at the side of the machine. Shaft 18 is journaled in a bearing 19 `formed in, or
connected to, themachine-base- 1" by a web or bracket 20, extending outwardly from.
the basel. Fixed on tliledshaft 18 is a bevel gear 21 located at thetop of the journal 19, s
and having its hub' 22 secured to the shaft 18 to rotate therewith. Meshing withpthe gear 21 is a bevel gear 23, Xed to a shaft 24. Shaft 24 iextends longitudinally along' the base 1, and is journaled in supports 25` and 26, carried uponthe base 1 by meansl v of brackets 27 and 28.
` 24 isa crank 29 to rotate the shaft."
` screw-threade`d, and is 'embraced by a nut 34, which nut is carried on an arm 35, fixed to the base 6 of the label carriage. Q s Thus, as the shaft 24 isrotated, the label carriage` is traveled slowly along, and the saw 17 is rotated to notchthe edge `of the labels a2 as they pass. In practice, it will be generally found advantageous to give the saw a much higher speed than is indicated in the drawings, which may readill7 be done by changing the size of thel screwLthread 4on the shaft and the` ratio of the gearing. s
- Means are provided bythe invention for changingthe relative position of the labels and the notching means, to bring the notches i lat the desired places in the labels, and for thispur'pose the saw 17 is preferably posi- Atiofnable along the shaft 18. As embodied, the shaft 18 is screwthreaded, and threaded thereon are two internally screw-threaded clamping plates ormandrels 37 and 38, betwfeenwhich thesaw 17 isV firmly clamped inftheidesired position. Marks or indications could be placed upon the Ashaft to indicate thevarious selected positions. Thus, ,the saw may be moved up and down ongthe Vshaft so as to notch the gang of labels inany desired position, to correspond to the date indications wanted.
Means arefprovided-by the invention for positioning thelabels relatively to the saw,
and to'regulate the depth of c utof the saw. As embodied, a movablegage plate 40 is provided, having attached thereto a'plu'rality of bolts`41, which bolts are screw-threaded into apertures in a plate 42, fixed upon the carriagebase 6. The labels are positioned so as to receive the notchingl cut, while the saw `clears the clamping plates 7 and 9. s vIn Fig. 4 of the drawings Ais shown an embodiment of a quick return for the` label Vcarriage if this is desired. For 'this purpose, the arm 35 is shown pivotally jointed la't44, andthe nut 34 is shown as a half nut,
the shaft 24`in such case 'having a square thread. A` spring 45 is arranged to throw either side of the pivotal centerl44, and a iingerpiece 46 isprovided on the halfnut 34. The half nut 34 may thus be moved into Fixed to the shaft shown and described, within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of theinvention, and without sacrificing its chief advantages."
