Description

THOMA$ A. coNKLm.
Improvement in Ice-Pickers and M eat-Mauls Combined.
N0.128,020. Pgtented lune18,l872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. CoNKLIN, on NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,020, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. CONKLIN, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Ice-Pick and Meat-Maul, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a hammer-shaped implement having a cluster of conical points upon its face, and a single sharp point directly opposite said face, and a cast handle, said parts all being cast in one and the same piece of metal. My invention also consists in the peculiar construction of the handle, as hereafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an implement which embodies my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the handle thereof previous to being finished.
The general form of the implement is hammer-shaped, as shown in Fig. 1. The face of the head Ais provided with a cluster of conical points, a, and is designed for use as a meatmanl. The conical points are believed to be better than square or rectangular ones, as they displace the fibers of the meat and make it tender without badly mangling and spoiling its shape. ThepointB at the opposite end of the head A is designed for an ice-pick. The head A, as described, is cast in one and the same piece with the handle 0. The handle 0 near the large end is cast in skeleton form, with a recess, 12, in each side, as shown in one side in Fig. 2. The recesses 11 b are filled with hard wood d, Fig. 1, and firmly pressed therein, when rivets 0 c or screws are passed through the wood d and the open parts of the handle 0, and their ends upset, when the wood is held firmly within the recesses, and may be smoothed oil or finished as desired.
This construction of the handle is very cheap,
