To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, Gnoncn BABRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nanticoke, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches, one of its objects being to provide a wrench of this type utilizing a chain so arranged that the wrench can be adjusted readily to pipes of different sizes.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character having simple and efiicient means for adjustably connecting one end portion of the chain to the head of the wrench.
A still further object is to provide a novel arrangement of eccentrics whereby a quick take up of slack in the chain will occur when the wrench is moved to turn the engaged pipe, thus reducing to the minimum the lost motion which has heretofore been present in pipe wrenches of the chain type.
A further object is to provide a wrench which will not indent or crush the pipe engaged thereby but which has a jaw of novel form which will engage the pipe at several points, thus to distribute the pressure thereon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing om the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 1.
Referring tothe figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the shank or handle of the wrench one end of which is extended between side plates 2 which are held to the shank by rivets or the like and are provided on their inner fates ith houlders .3 de.

signed 0 'fit snugly against the backand end faces of the shank 1. The plates l2'are eXtendedpa'st-and beyond thefront face of the shank to form ears 4 whichare thickened as shown and which are "provided; in their inner faces, with recesses 5.
Each of the side plates 2 has an extension 6 projecting beyond the end of the shank, said extension having a curved edge constituting a continuation of the front. edge of the plate 2 to constitute an eccentric bearing portion, indicated at 7.
A jaw which, in the present instance is made up of three plates 8, is connected to the extensions 6 by means of a rivet 9 or the like, one of the plates being extended between the extensions while the other plates lap the outer faces of said extensions, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. Each of the plates 8 has a recess 10 in one edge-the walls of which are stepped as shown inFig. ,1, thus to provide shoulders for engaging the pipe or other article to be ipped.
Pivotally connected to t e plates 8 is one end of a chain 11 and the pins which con. nect the links of the chain are extended laterally to form stop lugs 12. The distance between the ears 4: is such as to allow the chain 11 to enter snugly therebetween and when so positioned the lugs 12 at one end of the link between the ears will enter the recesses 5, as shown in Fig. 3, thus to anchor the chain to the plates 2.
In using the wrench herein described the chain is drawn tightly, around the pipe or other object to be turned and is then positioned between the ears 4 with lugs 12 on one of the links seated within the recesses quickly and firmly engage the pipe or other able sitting of metal, particularly a large size tool.
Whatis eiaimed i-s I A pipe Wrench including connected to and extending between opposite sides of the extensions and cooperating to form a jaW,' said plates having reeesses in one edge provided with stepped llhn'n ieszof' this patent. may be :ob'cained ,for.
a" shank-or handle, side plates secured thereto and having spaced ears provided in their inner faces with recesses, said plates having end ex- -tension-s; saidextensions and plates forming eccentric bearing edges, plates pivotally Walls, and a chain connected at one end to the jaw and inseitible between the ears, said chain havingl-ateraliy extending lugs insertible into the recesses in the ears, the eccentric edges constituting take up bearings for the chain.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as'my own, I have hereto affixed 'iny signa ture in. the-presence of two Witnesses. and to GEORGE BARRALL.
