ED. MUBREY, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
cLAM-snELL BUCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application filed November 6, 1917. Serial No. 200,482.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ED. MURREY, a citizen of the: Unitedv States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska,-have invented certain, new and useful Im rovements in Clam-Shell Buckets; and I 0 declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying" drawings, and to the-letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to clam shell buckets, and has for its principal object to provide. a bucket of that character wherein the shell or bucket sections are so mounted that an exceedingly wide .reach is obtained, and wherein. the bucket closing and opening mechanism is constructed in such a; manner mthat thee hoisting poweris applied therethrought equally to bOtqhQSGCtiOIlS of the us tin p n'p si I y III is a tra $Yers e sectional view on .i
I the. pai 0P- e ti0n 157 qha formed in such a manner. that when brought,
bucket and a positive downward pressure is placed thereon during the closingoperation.
In acconiplishingthisobject, I have provided improved details of structure, the pre- 'ferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a side elevation of a bucket constructed according to the present invention; the bucket being shown in open pot n, v v
1 ;Fig, II is alongitudinal sectional viewof the saimpnthelme II- -II,Fig;- IV, showf Fig, a plan view of the parts particutf operating'levers.
and" ar seats; sit-their. Q p se aid to ere nthem a e mas hea larlgfiillustrating the carrying, frame and v buc e rigidity to the frame and supplement the side beams in supporting the bucket and its operating mechanism presently described.
Erected centrally on each of the side beams. of the frame are standards 5 5. which at their upper ends revolubly carry a transverse shaft 6- for a purpose later described, and over the upper end of each standard curved plates 7 are fixed, the ends of which are provided with apertures 8 wherein the upper ends of anchor rods 9 are fixed; the lower ends of said rods being extended to the opposite ends of the frame where they are attached thereto to form a lifting device whereby thestrain on the frame undera load is distributed evenly over the frame, and: its balance maintained.
' Supportedtrans versely within. the frame,
and interposed ear wheels 13 13 of lesser diameter than t e outer wheels; the wheels all being in mesh, and those of eachpair b n equ l in iame r.- s ha th vwill moveiequally and simultaneousl to carry together they. form. a longitudinally separa ,le semi-cylindrical. carrier; the said sec tions 15-+15f being pivotally suspended respectively by the shafts 10-1 0 by means of ,pluralit of S- shaped hanger arms 16,
it being pre erred to use four of such arms" forthe supportof; each bucket section, and
y the same are dis osed opposite ends and at the centerso the sections withthe two outer arms ,pivotally connected with the shaft by ,means of V sha I ,bers 17 1f? and, the two intermediate arms d bracket memof each section; are bolted to the opposite faces of, the wheels and the 9f ie hss tionsre c ne d I67,
spectivelyqr by. transverse s ha; fts; 18 165, which. are extendedktlirough' the endsiof the said arms and through the Wheels 12-42 so that revoluble movementpfthejwheels will Ward and from closed position. I
To move the bucket sections on pivoted monntin from vlan open toe .qlosed position; I pro'vi ethe wheels 13-13 wlth actuating lever arms? 20-20; which are pivoted on the shafts 11l1 at 0p osite sides of the wheels and'are bolted t ereto so that radial' movement of the said arms from a substantially horizontal posltio ni as "shown in Fig. I I, to a vertical position, as
shown-in Fig." L- w'ill' revolve th'e wheels 13* 131 and. incidentally the wheels 12 12, meshing'therewith to move the bucket sectionstogether 1 To' e'fi'ect this radial; movement of the bucket closing arms;*-I*provide a closing cable 22, which isattaehed atone end to a derrick-or the like, (not shown) and extends over sheave Whee1s 2323 revolubly carried by thevoute'r endsof the arms"20"20, and
-then upwardly to the derrick and'suitable "power or hoistiiig' drumsf-the cable {also operates over a" sheave wheel 24; centrally ounted o'n 'the sha' f-tdso that tension on the cable moves the freeends of the arms radially upward to -revolve the, Wheels 13- 13 and 1Q 12" to close the sections of *the bucket together, and will at the same time exert downward'pr' on frame through the s 6 and standards "-5 5""ui1til*"the closiing operationds comi pleted; therebyunder normal conditions in- 'surin a full bucket. It is further apparent that by providing the gear mechanism for actuating the sections of the bucket, both will move equally and simultaneously to rriaintainan even balance'onthe frame, and danger of losing any part of the load is eliminated,
*Having thus d'escribedmy invention, What I claini a's' new therein, and desire'to secure by Letters-Patentg 'is v Y 1.
