Description
A. B. FARQUHAR.
Improvement in Flows.
Patented June 18, .1872.
fizyewior (My? NITED STATES ARTHUR B. FARQUHAR, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,970, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
I, ARTHUR B. FARQUHAR, of York, York county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements iri Plows, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the frame or stock of the plow, which has its two principal partsthe beam and standard-joined together by a hinge or swivel-joint, the standard being held.
from turning backward when in use by a brace, by which arrangement the same stock may be used for a variety of plowing attachments; also, an adjustable sole attached to the standard in such a manner that it may be set to any required ngle with the standard; also, a plow-stock which can be folded or closed up for convenience in transportation without separatin g its parts.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of a plow-stock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front representation of the standard detached from the beam. Fig. 3 is a print showing an oblique front view of the stock ready to receive the plow.
A is the beam, which maybe made of wood or iron, and to which the handles B are firmly and appropriately attached. 0 is the standard, which may also be of either wood or iron. If of iron, the accompanying drawing shows a model of construction so plainly as to need little description. The bars forming the said standard are fastened to the beam by a bolt, or otherwise, so as to permit the angle of standard to be varied withrespect to the beam. F is the brace passing through the beam, and having a thread and nut upon its upper end and an eye or loop at the other, through which the bolt G passes. By screwing the nut down on the rod F the standard 0 will be drawn forward, and by screwing it up toward the end of said rod the standard may be drawn backward. E is the sole, fastened to the sole-brace D by a bolt, 01. The sole piece or brace D is attached to the lower end of standard 0 by a bolt or rivet at I, upon which it can turn in the manner of a hinge, and has its end turned up behind the bolt at so as to pass between the plates or bars forming the standard 0, close to the clamp-bolt G. Said end, being thicker than the loop end of brace F, will be clamped and held firmly in place by tightening the bolt G aforesaid. In this manner the sole E may be set to a greater or less angle with the standard 0, to
correspond with the adjustment of said stand.
ard with the beam A. To this standard the plowing attachments are fastened by a bolt or bolts passing through the space. between the two bars forming the standard, which space is plainly seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The standard 0 may be used with or without the sole E and sole-brace D. If it is desired to make the standard of wood, it may be attached to the beam by means of plates of iron upon each side of its upper end, bolted to both beam and standard, and permitting of adjustment of standard, as hereinbefore described.
The wooden standard is supplied with holes for attaching the plow, and may also have the sole E, when desired. adjustable with the beam, permits the clevis H to embrace the beam on its sides, thus enabling the plow to be run to or from the row,
or to take more or less land.
I claim--- The beam A, double standard 0, adjustingbrace F, removable sole E, and sole-brace I),
when all are combined to operate as set forth.
A. B. FARQUHAR.- Witnesses present:
