IITED STATES PATEN GEORGE D. COLEMAN, DECEASED, LATE or REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS, BY LLI s.
CoLEMAN,-ExECUTRIx, 0E REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAINT-MIXER.
To all whom z'tmay concern: i
Be it known that GEORGE D COLEMAN, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, did invent certain new andusefulImprove-I ments in Paint-Mixers; and I, N LLIE S. COLEMAN, 'or-Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, his executrix, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of; the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same.
This invention relates to a mixer, suitable particularly for mixing paint or sim1- lar substances, of the type in which a stirringdevice is rotated within a bucket or other receptacle by manual power.,
The object of the invention is to produce a paint-mixer, of the type in question, in which the mechanism is adapted for use with, and adjustable for application to, an ordinary receptacle, such as a bucket. To this end the invention comprises the paintmixer hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim. 7
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a paint-mixer embodying the present invention, shown as applied to a metal bucket of which a portion is broken away to disclose the stirring-devices.
The invention is illustrated as embodied in a paint-mixer comprising a vertical shaft 1, which is supported in bearings 2 and 3, in a. receptacle such as the Sheet-metal bucket 4 shown in the drawing. The stirring-members are supported and actuated by the shaft 1. A cross-bar 5 is fixed to the upper part of the shaft, and from this cross-bar a series of rods 6 depend, and these rods, as well as the cross-bar serve to stir and mix the body of the material within the receptacle 4. To stir up the heavier ingredients from the bottom of the receptacle and maintain a circulation there in, four stirring-members, in the form of arms 7, 7 and 8, 8, project radially from the lower portion of the shaft, these arms being fixed in a head 9. To further promote the circulation of the contents of the receptacle and also to prevent accumulation of the material upon the walls, a scraper is provided in the form of a strip of metal whichhas an upright portion 10 arranged,
to move close to the walls of the receptacle,
Specification of Letters Patent. i Pat el ltefl Application filed November 21-, 19 16. "Seria1No.1 3 2,'5 58.'
I the scraper being fixed, at its lower end,-to
one of the arms 7, while the upper part comprises an integral horizontal member 11, which is fixed to the shaft 1. 1 1 The shaft 1 is rotated by means of bevel gears-12, which connect-it with a horizontal shaft 13 provided with a hand-crankll. The shaft 13 is mounted in a bearing 15.-
In order that the mechanism of the mixer se maj ms;
maybe readily applied to and 1 removed from a bucket or other convenient receptacle, and may also be adjusted to the size thereof,
the shaft- bearings 2 and 15 are supported a by members which extend to the walls of the receptacle and are adjustable in length.
The bearing 2 is formed in a cross-piece 16, to which arms 17 are fixed by bolts 18 passing through slots in the respective members, while the bearing 15 is supported on a lateral projection 19 from the cross-bar 16,
and this member 19 is also provided with a hooked extremity 21 which fits .over the upper edge of the receptacle, and which may be made with suflicient resiliency to grasp and be retained by the bead 22 at the edge.
The head 9'at the" lower end of theshaft is provided with a conical lower surface 23. and the lower bearing-member 3 is in the form of a metal plate stamped to form a suitable recess for the reception of this conical surface. This bearing-member is laid loosely in the bottom of the receptacle,
and in order that it may be held centered therein it is provided with three radiating arms 24:, which extend to the walls of the receptacle and have upwardly-turned ends I .25 to seat against the walls and prevent any lateral movement of the bearing-member; A feature of the invention resides in the provision of, adjustability in the length of the arms 24, to fit them to receptacles of differentdiameters. For this purpose each arm is made in two parts, slotted to receive a bolt 26 by which they are fixed together in adjustable relation,
The stirring-arms 7 and 8 are made preferably of stout sheet-metal, and are so inclined that when theparts are rotated in the normal direction of operation, as indicated r 10 5 have alifting effect upon the part of the by the arrow in theg'drawing, these arms contents of the receptacle through which they are moved, so that they tend constantly to stir up the heavier ingredients of the paint-mixture from the bottom of the receptacle.
' The inclination ofthe arms 7 and 8, and the conical or pointed form of the head 23,have a useful function in connection with another mode of operation of the paint-mixer, namely,,that in which the stirring-devices are introduced into a body of pigment or other plastic material with-ina keg or other receptacle. When the paint-mixer is to be used in this manner the lower shaft-bearing 3 is not used. The vuser presses the head 23 against the middle of the body of material Which is to be stirred, and at the same time rotates the mechanism by'means of the crank 14. The inclination of the arms 7 and 8 is suchas to cause them to advance helically into the body of' the material, While the pointed form of the head 9 permits the head also to enter the vmaterial Without great resistance.
The arms 7 have serrated lower edges, which 4 are of utility particularly in connection With the mode of use last described, since these edges will enter and break up a body of dense plastic material more easily than in the-case ofa straightorcontiuuous edge.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is; I
A paintmixer having, in combination, a shaft, means for rotating the shaft, laterally adjustable means-for centering the shaft in a receptacle near its upper and its lower end, and stirring-members secured to the shaft comprising flat stirring-members located at the bottom of the shaft and radiating therefrom, and all having a' similar pitch, a cross bar secured to theshaft above theradially extending stirring-members and having rods, dependingfromsaid bar, anda strip secured tothe outer endof oneof said radial members and extending upwardly substantiallyparallel with theshaft and securedat its upper end to the shaft.
