Be it known that I, Louis V. AnoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enablev others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tonumerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in dolls, and has relation more particularly to devices of this ,character known as talking and creeping dolls; and it is the object of theinvention in part to provide a device of this general type, ofl a comparatively. simple and inexpensive nature having novel and improved means, whereby the device may be caused to imitate the movements of the object-which it represents, as well as to vproduce sounds imitative of a child, and in part to providel a device of this general character wherein the mechanism thereof is substantially invisible when the device is in yoperative position and normally presented to the eye. p A This. invention consists also in certain novel features of the construction and' combinations and arrangements of the several vparts of the improved doll, whereby certain important advantages are attained,.and .the device is rendered simpler, lessfexpensive and otherwise better adapted and more con.

venient for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In describing my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views. l

Figure 1 represents a plan view, partly broken away, of my improved`V device; and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation ofthe same.

In the drawings, 1 represents Va supporting frame designed to carry the operating mechanism, to the top of which is secured in any convenient or desired manner the bellows 2, asl by means of pins 3 passing through suitable apertures in the lugs 4, which are formed integral with the supporting framel. The supporting-framed is preferably made from a single vpiece'of suitable sheet material, channel-shaped in crosssection, provided with supporting pieces 5.-5, located nearthe ends thereof. Struck up from the side walls6-6 of the supportrng frame 1 near the bottom thereof `are integral outwardly extending guides two of which are struck up from`feach of the said side walls 6, each of said guidesy 7fprovided withan elongated slot 8, for the reception of the extensions `9 formed on the reciprocating member 10. T he reciprocating memberslO are also provided each with two elongated yslotsll, for the reception of the guiding lugs 12, also struck up from and which form an integral part of the side walls 6.

The cranks 16 being set in opposite directions, give to the reciprocating members 10 a pushY and pull motion, muchthe same as a creeping child, one of the members 10 pushing forward while the other is pulling. lThis` operation is continuous, one reciproeating member pushing once and then pulling,and the other member 10 pulling once and then pushing, v .i

24 represents a gear wheel mountedupon a `suitable shaft 25, forming a part fof the gear train, the teeth of said wheel engaging a stop 26 slidably mounted in the side walls 6 of the supporting frame, so arranged that when the stop 26 is moved inthe direction indicated by thearrow, the gear train is set iu motion and the device is thereby operated.

The supporting frame 1 with its operating mechanism and attached bellows, in its operative position, is located within the body of a doll, not shown, and is invisibleto the eye.

The arms and legs of the doll, which are represented in dotted lines in the drawings, are secured to the extensions 9 formed on the reciprocating members 10, and when operated, the device vis designed to represent a creeping doll, and to produce sounds 'orsayings -imitative of a child. 28 represents depending flanges Vformed integralv with the supporting frame, the inner faces of which, togetherV with the outer faces of the side walls 6 4of the supporting frame 1, form vguides lfor the centrally-ar ranged extensions 13 formedon the reciprocating-members 10. They, together with the elongated xslots S inthe guides 7, provide means to *prevent accidental vseparation of the reciprocatingmembers '10 from the guiding lugs 12.

'The operation of the device lis as fo'llows: By Ymeans of a keyengaging with the shaft 27, which yprojects through the body o'f-the doll, the winding `of the spring ,is effected.y By moving the slidable stop 26, one end of which projects outside 'the body Vof'the'doll, out'of engagement with the teeth of the gear wheel 24, and' in Vthe direction indicated bythe arrow 'in Fig. 1 of thedrawings, rthe mechanism is set in motion and operates'in the vfollowing manner. The operating shaft 19, through the 'cranks 16 and the crank pins or studs 15, which pass through theslots 14, cause the Vreciprocating members 10 to be reciprocated, at Athe same time causing the bellows 2 to be actuated by 'meansof vthe lever 17, the ends of vwhich are operatively connected to vthe crank pins 15 and tothe top of the bellows/L'as'at 18. The supporting frame 1 and the reciprocating 'members `1() are made from single 'piecesof'suitable material, and are of suc-h 'a nature as to lend themselves readily to manufacture from sheet metal 'by the 'use of suitable punches and dies.
