The present invention relates to an imprOVment in thread `parting mechanism for weft replenishing looms. When the iilling on the bobbinl or .filling carrier or' a weft replenishing loom has been exhausted to a predetermined extent and the. bobbin is about to -be ejected from the shuttle, t-he usual practice is to secure or clamp the thread extending from the fell of the cloth to the outgoing bobbin, sever it relatively near the shuttle by means connected with the shuttle feeler and afterward close to the selvtage by parting means mounted on or connected with the loom temple. Thethread is thereafter allowed to drop into a receptacle provided for thepurpose. In the present invention the thread is not positively clamped prior to the severing operation but 1s' received and retained in a retaining device so thatthe necessity for the usual somewhat complicated thread clamping means is eliminated. The thread parting means often employed consists 'of two shearing blades, one of which is fixed and the other movable, the device operating upon the principle of the ordinary scissors. A serious detriment to the more successful operation of this type of 'thread parting means lies in the rapidity with which the cutting edges are worn away, because of the fact that the thread is not held suHcient-ly taut between the cutting edges but is allowed to slip between the blades in such manner that they have a binding effect rather than a cutting el'ect upon the thread. In the present invention a thread positioning device is provided and arranged along means 'so that the thread will be properly positioned during the thread parting operation whereby the binding effect beside the thread parting .i

The means for engaging and drawing the filling thread 24; into position to be acted upon by the thread parting means consists of a thread engaging hook 25 carried by the shuttle feeler 18. A thread parter actuating means 26 is mounted upon the breast beam 12; and a thread receiving and retaining device 27 is mounted upon the loom temple 28 secured to the breast beam. The thread parting means comprises a fixed blade 30 secured within a recess in a bracket 31 secured to the front of the lay 22 and a movable blade 32 pivoted on the fixed blade and the bracket 31 at 83. A helical spring 3ft (Fig. 4) encircling the pivot 33 tends to maintain the movablehlade in open position. The movable blade is adapted to be actuated by the thread partei' actuator 26 contacting with the stud 35 projecting laterally from the lower part of the movable thread parter blade 32 upon a forward beat of the lay when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, which is immediately before the insertion of a fresh supply of filling in the shuttle. A thread positioning device is secured to the base 3G of the thread parter supporting bracket 31 by means of the screws 38. The construction of the thread positioning device 37 is such that the movable thread parter blade 32 passes between the thread positioning device 37 and the thread parter supporting bracket 31 during the thread parting operation. The thread positioning device 37 is provided with an edge 39 which extends rearwardly somewhat beyond the cutting edge of the fixed thread parter blade 30 so that when the thread engaging hook 25 engages the filling thread 24 and draws it against the edge 39 of the positioning device 37 the thread will beheld in sucl. position as to be acted upon by 'the thread parter substantially at right angles to its length throughout the thread parting operation thereby insuring a clean cutting action.

The operative position ofthe boss 42 is determined by the engagement of the lug -il-B projecting laterally from the thread parter actuator 26 with a slop, 44 secured to the bracket 4 1. The thread engaging hook 25'is pivoted at 48 upon a hook supporting lever 49, in. turn pivoted at 50 upon the shuttle feeler 18. The spring 51, one end of which engages the thread engaging hook 25 and the other end of which engages a lug 52 projecting laterally from the hook supportinglever 49, tends to maintain the heel 53 of the hook 2' against the lug 52.* The thread'engaging hook 25 is made thus yielding so that after it has swung'to` the left and has commenced its forward motion, which causes it to engage the shuttle race 54 (which is indicated in dotted line inFig. 2 just below the shuttle position relatively thereto. The spring 55 which encircles the pivot pin 50 tends to maintain the tail of the hook supporting lever 49 against the lug 56 projecting laterally from the shuttle feeler 18. The lever 49 is provided on its rear edge with a bulging portion 57 which is adapted to he engaged by a bunter 58 secured upon the shuttle box 59. a lay, a breast beam, thread parting means mounted on the lay, including a thread p0si tioning device, and means connected with the weft replenishing mechanism for engaging the thread and drawing it against the thread positioning' device.
