PROJECTILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAWEL BECKER, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectiles, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in projectiles, such as are adapted to be discharged by ordinary guns and has as its special object the provision of a projectile formed in sections which are disrupturable during flight so that the forward section may be advanced at an accelerated rate of speed after the initial discharge.
A further object is to provide a plurality of laterally pivoted wing-like extensions whereby the trajectory of the projectile is improved, means being provided for the extension of the wing-like elements during the flight of the projectile.
A still further object is to provide the main section with a chamber containing an explosive charge adapted to be detonated by a time fuse within a given interval of time.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational View showing a projectile made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial side elevational and sectional view, the section being taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same section, the Wing elements being shown in an open position.
The projectile comprises a hollow cylindrical base 10, having a solid head 11 and a pair of spaced, raised rings 12 and 13 upon its periphery, the ring 13 being at the edge of the chamber 14 which is adapted to contain an explosive charge 15, detonated by a fuse 16, inserted through an opening 17, normally filled by the plug 18. The interior of the ring 13 is screw-threaded and is engaged with an annular flange 20 forming the lower' end of the main element 21 which is so recessed and shaped as to present a triangular body having arouately curved outer surfaces forming the walls of a similarly shaped chamber 22,
adapted to contain another charge of explosive 23, at the farther end of which is another time fuse 24. r
The opposite end of the body 21 is provided with another flange 25 engaged by screw threads, within a band or. ring 26, ntegral with a cylindrical element 27, having upon exterior another ring 28 from which pro ects the usual conical head 29 of the pro ectile, the same terminating in a hard steel point 30, as is usual, and it will be understood that the several rings 12, 13, 26 and 28 are adapted to engage within the grooved rifiing formed within the bore of the gun or cannon from which the projectile is discharged in the usual manner whereby a rotary motion is given to the proectile.
Passing through the flanges 20 and 25, in their Wider portions, are screws 32, having conical points 33 arranged in alinement, three pair being indicated and engageable by the conical points 33, are Winged elements 35, curved so that their exterior surface 36, when in folded position, form a substantially unbroken cylindrical surface, having the same diameter as the cylinder 27 while the inner surfaces 37 of the winged elements are adapted tomake close contact with the exterior of the central body 21.
These winged elements 35 are held in close relation with the center body, due to the torsion springs 39, one end 40 of which is centered within an opening formed in the central recess within the body of the Winged elements, while the opposite end 4:]. extends into openings formed in the body 21, the effect being 'to maintain the surfaces 37 closely in engagement with the surface of the body 21.
Formed with this body 21 are shoulders 43 adapted to engage with the corresponding surfaces 44 of the wings 35, when the same are in an open position, as can best be seen in Fig. 4:, while, when the wings are in a folded position, their outer, reduced edges 4.6 make contact so as to partially envelop the same.
fling of the gun barrel, are thrown outward until contact is made between the surfaces 43 and 44, the unfolding of the wings taking place simultaneously with the discharge of the projectile, and if the fuse 16 has been properly timed, the powder 15 is caused to be exploded, separating the, base from the central element, the discharge of the explosive disrupting the base section from the second or body section, propelling the latter, together with the point, at'an accelerated speed and, due to the action of the wings its course is maintained through the'atmosphere in an unerring manner, while the final explosion of the charge 23 takes place by the action of the fuse 24 at a predetermined moment.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a projectile, the combination with a sectional body comprising a base, a central body and a point, said base and point being screw-threadedly engaged to said body, a
plurality of Wings'pivotally engaged with cylindrical contour upon their exterior when in a folded position, means for normally holding said wings in a folded position, means for limiting the outward movement of said wings, explosive charges carried in said base and body portions adapted to'independently be detonated, and means permitting the disruption of said base from said central body.
2. In a projectile, the combination with a base, a body section and a point, of annular flanges formed on said body section, one of said flanges being engageable with said base and the other with said point, an explosive charge carried in said base, a time fuse therein adapted to explode the same whereby said, base is disrupted from the body, an explosive charge carried in said body, a time fuse for exploding the same, a plurality of curved, wing-like elements pivotally secured between the flanges of said body and adapted when in -a folded position to be held tightly thereagainst, means for holding said wing elements in engagement with said body and stops formed in said body adapted to limit the outward movement of said wings when unfolded.
