GEORGE F. SEVERS, OF CENTERVILLE, IOWA.
UNIVERSAL JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed May 23, 1918. Serial No. 236,183. d
.To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SEvnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centerville, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Universal Joints,
of which the following is a specification,
ig. 2 is a front view in elevation showing one section of the body of my joint, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the section shown in Fig.2.
Fi 4 is a view in rear elevation of the' sectidn shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the inner end of one of the shafts.
Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of'the key plate, while Fig. 7 is an edge view of the same. I
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of my oint, which body comprlses a pair of similarly constructed sections 22, each section 2 is provided with an annular flange 3, and extending through the abutting flanges 3 are suitable fastening means, as bolts 4.
My improved joint comprises two sectional structures of which each section 2, of-
body 1, is a part thereof. It will only be.
necessary to describe one of the sectional structures, as the other is a duplicate.
The section 2 of the body, is substantially semi-spherical in shape and is'provided with slots 5, extending substantially longitudinally thereof, and in these slots 5, are'positioned the spurs 6 on the inner end of shaft 7. The extreme inner end of each shaft 7,
is rounded as clearly seen in Fig. 1', and the inner end of each spur 6 is rounded in the same are of a circle as the inner end of shaft 7, so that shaft 7 can have a relatively free swinging movement in large aperture 8 formed in the body 2.
Each face 2 is provided with comparatively wide sockets 9, on the abutting sectlons 2, that register for receiving the double beveled ends 10, of the fingers 11 of the key plate 12. The key plate 12 is flat on both sldes at 13, so as to provide smooth bearing faces for the inner ends of shafts 7. Each finger 11 is beveled transversely at 14, to reduce the weight of the device. By reason of the form of sockets 9, and the beveled ends 10 of fingers 11, the plate is securely held in the middle of my jolnt and spaces the inner ends of shafts 7 apart.
On each shaft is a closure cap 15, which cap 15, is provided with a gasket or rubber r ng 16, bearing upon the surface of section 2 of Fig. 1. Locking nuts 17 arethreaded upon the threaded portion 18 of shaft 7,
and interposed between the inner locking nut and the outer end of the slidable cap 15, 1s a coll spring 19, which normally holds the sliding cap 15 pressed against the section 2; gasket or ring 16 forms an eflicient closure for preventing dirt or moisture entering the body 1 of the joint. Upon carefully examining the drawing it will further be noted that each section 2 is provided with ',narrowbeveled edges'20, which edges 20 permit a free movement of the shaft 7 in each section 2, by allowing the portion 20 of the inner rounded end of each shaft 7 to turn freer inthe section. I
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing, it' will be understood that I have produced a Very eflicient device, and I also wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make certain alterations in my joint as will fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: I
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a bodv formed of sections,
said sections provided with meeting edges, said sectlons provided with registering sockets in their meeting edges, a key plate provided with fingers resting in the registering sockets of vthe sections of the body, and shafts extending into said body at opposite sides of the key plate.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sectional body, said body provided with beveled portions constituting sockets, a key plate provided with fingers, each finger being doubled beveled on its outer end, said key plate being provided with fiat central faces, the double beveled ends of the fingers fitted in said sockets, and
shafts extending into said body and positioned contiguous to the flat central faces of the key plate.
'3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of abody comprising two imilarly constructed sections, each section provided with a flat outer face and with comparatively wide sockets formed in said outer face, said section being also'provlded with comparatively long longitudinal-extending .sockets, a shaft extending into each section, the inner end of each shaft provided with side-spurs, each spur being seated in a longitudinal socket, the inner end of each shaft and the inner end of each spur being permitting. the rounded ends of the shaft to have a rocking action over said faces.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
