THIRD AND FOURTH POINT SUPPORT FOR BRAKE-BEAMS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREnEinc T. DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at (.hicago. Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Third and Fourth Point Supports for Brake-Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved support as applied to a spring plank for trucks.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in third and fourth point supports'for brake beams which possesses the properties of being rigid at its point of connection to the spring plank or other part of the truck to which it is secured and of being flexible at its extremity, or extremities, where it supports the beam.
The object of my present invention is to construct a single support of the character described which possesses the properties of rigidity. safety and flexibility and, according to the forms of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, that portion of the upport'which is secured to the spring plank and which extends on each side thereof is reinforced by a flange or flanges whereby it is made rigid and coextensive with this rigidity it .is a support serving as a safety bar. the. reinforced portions thereof extending under the compression member of the lie-iii'n. as shown in Fig. 2: whereas that portion located at the extremities of the support and which extend beyond the compression member and under the tension member is flattened to form a yielding or flexible support for the inner side of the beam. This flattened portion may, if desired, be prois a side elevational view of' the Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with a flange or flanges at its extreme outer end so as to locate the hinge or yielding section of the support close to the rigid safety bar section.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the spring plank of the truck and 2 the compression member of the brake beam, 3 the tension member thereof, and 4 the strut. 5 indicates the wearing shoe of the fourth point support, which wearing shoe in this instance is clamped to the tension member to cooperate with the fourth point support located therebeneath.
It is obvious that where my improved form of support-is used in connection with a third point arrangement, this supporting shoe should be located at the center of the beam, being preferably carried by the nose portion of the strut as is well known.
The supporting member Or track is composed of a rigid medial or attaching portion 6 which may be secured in any suitable manner to the spring plank 1, rivets 7 being shown for this purpose in the accompanying drawings. While I have shown this support as extending on each side of the spring plank and being made of one piece, it is ob vious that it could be divided at its center, i. e., made in two pieces, the separate parts thereof being attached in any suitable manner to the spring plank ofv the truck. However the support is made, the attaching portion thereof is preferably reinforced by flanges (5 and if the support is made of pressed steel as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, its flanges may be bent as is well understood,
or .if the support is formed with an angle, as
shown in Figs. (5 and 7, the depending flange 6 may be left intact as it was originally formed in rolling the angle. The rigid or reinforced portion of the support extends outwardly some distance from the spring plank and under the compression member of the beam so as to form a safety bar whose. function is to prevent the beam from falling in the event that the hangers are lost or disconnected. The extremity of the support indicated at 6 in Figs. 1 to at inclusive is flattened, this flattened portion being located under the supporting member carried by the tension rod or strut as the case may .be with respect to fourth and third point date itself when the brakes are applied due to the wear of the shoe or the wheel.
In Fig. 6 I have shown this portion formed by bending the depending flange 6 of the angle so that the same will be flush with the horizontal flange of the angle. By providing a flat extremity as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, this non-rigid end is flexible throughout its entire length, but if it is desired to locate the flexible end at one point, say just beyond the rigid safety bar portion of the support, the flange or flanges may be cut away as at 6, thus leaving the extremity of the supporting track rigid, while locating the hinged 0r flexible portion thereof at a single point.
It will be readily understood of course that still other modifications and adaptations of my improved third and fourth point support for brake beams may be made and substispirit of what I claim to be my invention.
I claim:
1. A one piece support for brake beams comprising a rigid safety bar portion, and a yieldingsupporting portion for the beam integrally connected to said safety bar portion and forming a continuation thereof.
2. A third or fourth point support for brake beams comprising a reinforced attaching portion extending beyond a part of the truck to which it is secured so as to rovide a comparatively rigid and strong sa ety bar portion, the extremity of said support being flexible.
3. A third or fourth point support for brake beams comprising a flanged rigid attaching portion forming a safety bar, and a flat yielding supporting portion integrally connected thereto and extending'therefrom to support the beam.
4. Athird or fourth point support for bra ke beams comprising a rigid supporting portion extending beyond the part of the truck to which it. is secured so as to form a strong safety bar element, the extremity of which safety bar element is continued outwardly to form ayielding supporting portion for the beam.
5. A third or fourth point support for brake beams comprising a reinforced attaching portion and a reinforced supporting portion, said portions being connected together by a flexible section.
