HENRY BARNES TREMAINE, OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE AEOLIAN COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
ALBUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
. Application filed. January 23, 1915. Serial No. 3,953.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY BARNES TRE- MAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Albums, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in albums such as albums for holding phonograph disk records, and provides a convenient card-index visible from the back of the album for seeing at a glance whether a particular record is contained in the album, and if so at what page.
The drawings illustrate my invention applied to a phonograph record album. Figure 1 is a back-elevation of the album; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the same; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view on line 33 in Fig. 2, showing some of the pocket-like leaves usual in albums of this sort; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification; and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of same showing a card in place.
Describing now the specific devices of the drawings, 1 is an album having leaves 2. A card index is combined with the back of this album consisting of a series of index-card holding devices 3 bearing designations, for example, for 1 to 12 as in Fig. 1 to correspond with the page designations in the album. These holding devices receive cards 4 upon which are written or printed the names of the records to be found at the pages of the same designation in the album. Fig. 1 shows that the record Sextet from Lucia is in the album and is to be found at page 1. As the album is filled with other records, their names are written on the index-cards corresponding to the page numbers where the records are placed in the album. Should it be desired to rearrange the records in the album or replace them in whole or in part with other records, the several cards can be removed and rearranged and replaced where necessary by new cards, with all the facility and advantages of a card-index.
The specific card-holding means shown in Figs. 2 and 3 comprises two united layers of material 5 and 6. L y 5 ha a serie f from the pockets 7. Reversely, the card is as easily replaced. I
The modification in Figs. 4 and 5 consists in providing only one layer 9 of material in which are the openings 9*. This layer is then glued to the album so as to leave the end-pockets 1O entirely analogous in operation and efiect to the previously described pockets 7. Fig. 5 shows an index-card 4 in place with its ends seated in the pockets 10.
In both constructions, the rectangular openings for the cards are backed by the album cover and the pockets in which the ends of the cards fit are overhung by the webs of material at the ends of the slots 5 or 9*, as the case may be. It will be noted that when the cards are inserted in position as described, they will be inward of the plane of the layer 5 or 9 in which the slots for their introduction and exposure are formed.
Hence, when the album is opened and placed on a table or the like the cards will be held out of contact with the surface or covering of said table and, therefore. protected against being torn, marred or displaced as the album may be shifted about.
It will be. apparent that the index-means might be furnished separately for attachment by the purchaser to albums of the ordinary kind.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
An album, having exteriorly applied to its cover two superposed layers of material provided with superposed rectangular openings of the same width, each pair of openings cooperating to form a card exposing slot for the reception of an individual index card; the openings in the inner layer of material extending at opposite ends beyond the openings in the outer layer, whereby a pair of pockets is formed at opposite ends of each slot to receive the ends of the corname to this specification in the presence of responding card; said card ends being ditwo subscribing Witnesses, this 22d day of rectlyroverlaid by the portionsof the said "lay ng- 1915.
