To all whom t may concern:

Be it lin-own that I, FREDERICK J. SHANL snr, Sr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll'vindow-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in window cleaning devices especially adapted for use in connection with automobiles, street cars, and other vehicles whereby the window in front of the driver of the vehicle may be readily and easily cleaned during operation of the vehicle and without the necessity of the operator leaving his station.

The object of the invention is the prediletion of a cleaning device as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which may be readily and easily attached to a window, and one which will be highly eflicient in use. Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a. part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a window equipped with a cleaning device embodying the invention, y

One form of the construction as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive comprises a pair of elongated arms 10 one of which is adapted for arrangement ,upon each side of the window 11 in connection with which the device is employed. The inner sides of arms 10 are lined with strips 12 of rubber or other suitable material adapted to contact with the window in order to elieot cleaning thereof when the device is operated.

Corresponding ends of arms 10 are connected by means of a tubular` pivot member 13 which passes loosely through a circular opening 1l which is formed in the window, as clearly shown in Figs. Zand Ll. The ends of pivot member 13 are reduced or cut away at opposite sides in order to form ears 15 which are adapted for engagement with elongated slots 1G which are formed in arms 10. lith this arrangement it will be seen that said arms 10 are locked to the pivot member 13 against relative rotary movement, thus effecting a rigid connection between said arms whereby the same will move in unison upon rocking of either of said arms. Said arms are locked in engagement with the ends of pivot member 13 by means of a bolt 17 and corresponding thumb nut 18, washer plates 19 being interposed between the head of said bolt and said thumb nut for obvious reasons. When the parts are thus assembled, the ears 15 do not project entirely through the arms 10, there beine` an intervening space between the ends of said ears and the washer plates 19, in order to allow for adjustment of said arms 10 toward each other by simply manipulating thumb nut 18, thus aording means for taking up any wear upon strips 12 during use of the device.

The arm 10 which cooperates with the inner side of the window is equipped at its free end with a handle 2O whereby the arms 10 may be manually oscillated in order to effect cleaning of the glass as will be readily understood.

The cleaner is of particular advantage in cold weather to prevent the gathering of frost upon the window or to readily remove the frost therefrom which may have gathered upon the window. The reason for this is that, with the construction set forth, by rapidly oscillating or rotating the arms 10, the friction produced by contact of the rubber strips with the window, will cause the latter to be heated and thus serve the function above mentioned. Also if desired the pivot of the arms 1() may be located midway the ends of said arms and in the center ol the window, in order to permit oit Complete rotary movement ot said arms as may be desired.

The form shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive is identical with that just described except that the outer ends of the cleaning arms 1U are ot channel form, and the Windouv engaging strips l2 are correspondinglyy formed, the arrangement being such that the longitudinal edges oi the members l2 Qontaet with the Window, thereby adapting said membersl lif to more etieetually clean the Window. While l nave illustrated and described the preferred forms ot' Construction ter Carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modiiieation with out departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not. wish to be limited to the precise details of Construction set tortln but desire to avail myself of suoli variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.

Haring described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

Cleaning device Comprising' a pair of arms adapted for engagement with opposite sides of a window; a pivot member adapted to extend through and roekingly engage with the Window, and with the opposite ends of which said arms engage; and a resilient covering lor the inner side oi each of said arms eo-extensire therewith for engagement with the adjacent side of the Window upon which the deriee is used, eaeh covering lia-Ying an opening for the passage of the pivot member, substantially as described.
