To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM F. l\[AHONY, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at lYashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVriting Kits, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to writing kits and has as its objects to provide a container or case for writing materials and which may also be employed as a blotter holder and an ink-stand; to provide a compact writing kit of convenient shape so that it may be carried around in the pocket, the construction being such that when not inuse, the ink bottle may be located within the case and. when it is desired to use the kit for writing purposes, the bottle may be removed from the interior of the kit and secured to the case in upright position, and when in this position, the bottle may be employed as an ink'well and a handle; to provide improved means for mounting the bottle in an upright position; and to provide improved means for removably securing the blotter in position on the container.

The above and other objects of my invention'are obtained in the structure described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure '1 is a perspective view of my improved writing kit.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals represent like parts in the several views, designates the body portion of my case; 11 the cover, and 12 the hinge for hingedly connecting the cover to the body 1 portion. The bottom of the body portion and the top of the cover are curved longitudinally toward each other from their central portions to their ends, so that at the center of the case a relatively deep pocket is obtained which is to receive the ink bottle or well. The cover has a rim or wall 13 which engages about the rim or wall 14 of the body portion when the kit is closed, as

is clearly shown in Fig. 4:. It isto be understood that the container or case may be con structed of any suitable material, but, preferably, it is formed of sheet metal of light weight. v

The end portions of the rim 1 t of the body portion 10 are cut-away and to the under surface of the container is secured, by gluing or the like, a pad 15 which is covered or faced with a blotter 16. The ends of the blotter 16 are folded about the ends of the body portion where the wall 14: is cut away,as clearly shown in Fig 3. Within the case and preferably secured to the front and rear portions of the wall 14 of the body portion are guides 17 which, in the present disclosure, are illustrated as constituting tubes of'relatively small diameter,

although it is to be understood that they may be formed of strips of metal curved as to form passage-ways. The ends of the tubes 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, are slotted or cut away for a portion of their length, as at 18. The clamping members which secure the ends of the blotter comprise Ushaped bails 19, the crossrods of which extend transversely of the container. The ends of the bails 19 are adapted to slide in the guideways formed, by the bores of the tubes 17 The transverse rods of the clamping members 19 are bent out wardly intermediate their ends, as at 20,

so as to provide raised portions which may be readily grasped between the fingers when moving the clamping bails into and out of clamping position.

From the aIrrangei'nent just described, it will be seen that when the blotter on the container has become soiled and it is desired to replace the same with a new one, the clamping bails 19 are moved inwardly toward each other, this being permissible as the tubes 17 are slotted as at 18. In inserting a new blotter, the ends thereof are folded about the ends of the body portion 10 where its walls are cut away, and the clamps are then moved outwardly from each other. As the bails move in a stright line and the ends of the bottom of the body portion are curved and intersect the plane in which the bails reciprocate the blotter is securely clamped in place against; the curved ends of the container. 7

Located in the space centrally of the body portion 10 is a bottle-receiving pocket having an upstanding flange or rim 21,. the contour of which corresponds to the configuration ot the. sides of the bottle which it is adapted to engage. Preferably secured to the interior of the cover 11 of the container as by soldering or the like are small flat boxes 23 having lids 2t) and in these boxes may be stored stamps, pens. clips. and the like. in the presmt instance. l have shown two such boxes, and the location of the same is such that. when the cover is tolded over the body portion. the bottle-receiving tlane e 21. will tit in there between. as shown in big. he bores 25 and the ink-bottle pocket 21 terminate short of the longitudinal walls and 14 so that spaces are provided along both sides of the case in which pencils and pen-holders may be placed.

ll' hen it is desired to carry the writing kit in the poetic, the bottle is placed within the chamber 21. and it is held against displacement due to the trictional contact between the edges of the bottle and the rim, and the pressure of the spring fingers Qt against the cap of the bottle. In this condition, the case is relatively fiat and commet so that it may be conveniently carried.

When it is desired to use the kit as an ink stand. the bottle is removed from its place within the chamber 21 and forced downwardly into the slot or opening 27. To use the device as a blotter, it is merely necessary to grasp the bottle to lift the kit onto the surface to be dried.

It is, of course, obvious that this invention is susceptible of yarious modifications and changes waich would be within the spirit of my invention without departing from the scope of the following claims.

A. container comprising a hollow body portion constructed of sheet metal be *ing an upstanding rim or wall, the end. portions out which are cut away. a cover hinged to said body portion, a blotter mounted on said body portion and having its ends inserted in the cut-away sections of said walls, and slidable means within the container to secure the in-- sorted ends of said blotter.

2. A container having a body portion and a cover therefor, the end walls of the body portion being cut-away, a blotter mounted on said body portion and having its ends inserted in the cut-away sections of said walls, and a clamp moiable lengthwise of and within said container adapted to engage the blotter ends and clamp them to said body portion.

3. A container comprising a body portion and a cover theretor, said. body portion having its bottom section curved at the ends and its end walls cut-away. a blotter mounted on said body portion with its ends inserted in the cut-away section of said end walls, and a clamp movable. lengthwise of and mounted within in said body portion and adapted to clamp the inserted ends of the bony against the curving bottom of said body portion.

A container comprising a body portion and a corer therefor, said body portion having bottom section curved at the ends and its end walls cut-away, a blotter mounted on said he ly portion with its ends inserted in the cut-away section of said end walls, gnideways on the side walls of said body portion, and a longitudinally movable clamp mounted in said guideways and adapted to clamp the inserted ends of the body against the curring bottom of said body portion.

A container having a body portion and a cover tl'mrctor, a blotter having its ends folded about the ends of said body portion, tubular guides in said body portion, and a clamping member having its ends extending into said tubular guides, said guides being slotted at their ends to permit reciprocation of said clamping member.

6. A container having a body portion provided with a curved bottom, a. cover for said body portion, a blotter having its ends tolded about the ends of said body portion, guides on said her y portion, U-shaped longitudinally movable clamping members having their ends slidably mounted in said guides, said guides being slotted to permit said clamping members to be moved inwardly, and said elan'iping members being adapted to clamp the ends of the blotter against the curring bottom of said body portion when said members are moved out- Wardly.
