ISRAEL C. MAYO, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,782, dated June 11, 1872.
To all persons to whoml these presents may come:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL C. MAYO, of Gloucester, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Boxes or Cases for packing and preserving for transportation, sale, or use, sh or various other matters; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end View, Fig. 3 a transverse section, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, of one of my improved packing-cases.
It is to be made of sheet metal, such as tinned iron, for instance. The body A of the box is to be cubical or a quadrilateral prism, either rectangular or square in section, the two opposite sides, a a, being parallel. narrow lip, b, at its top, turned down outwardly at a right angle to the side. The same is the case with each end, c, the end lips being shown at d d. The cover B is to rest on the lips of the open top of the body, and it is to be made or provided with flanges or lips e e, to extend from it downward around and underneath the lips b b of the body, such cover being held to the body by the four lips b b and e e, each lip e being' so tted to the next adjacent lip b as to enable the cover to be slid or moved rectilinearly on or ofi' the boxbody. The cover at its ends is also provided with two end lips, f g, one, f, of which is bent around underneath and into parallelism with the cover, as shown. The other, when the cover is in place on the body, so that the lip j' is underneath the rear end lip of the body, projects beyond the front-end lip of the body a distance equal or about equal to the width of such end lip, the same being in order that the portion or lip so projecting may be turned down andunderneath the front end lip of the body so as to make a tight joint therewith.
By the said construction of the box-body,
viz., with the two -side lips and the two end lips, and the cover also with two side lips and Each of the said sides has a' two end lips, arranged as shown, (one only of such last-mentioned' lips being turned down preparatory to the fixation of the cover in place,) I am enabled to produce a packingcase admirably adapted for holding sh, particularly smoked halibut or salmon, or packing such for sale or use, as occasion may require.
To enable the cover to be either wholly or partially removed from the body of the box, it will first be necessary to turn up the frontend lip into or above the plane of the cover, which having been done, the cover may easily be slid backward upon the box.
The arrangement of the side lips of the boxbody and cover is advantageous or better than to have the cover slide in grooves in the boxbody, for with my arrangement when the sides of the box are sprung outward by packing the box too closely the cover on being put in place will draw them together and make close joints, which would not be the case were the cover to slide in grooves.
The sides or ends of the box, if necessary, may be punctured with holes, as shown at h, to allow air to circulate freely into and out of the box in order to keep the tish or other matters in it dry or to promote their preservation.
I am aware that a packing-box has been made with a cover to slide in grooves of the body. I am also aware that it is not new to make a box with its cover and two sides provide-d with side lips arranged as in my box. Therefore, I made no claim to either of such modes of applying a cover to a box.
I have combined with the body and cover provided with side lips arranged as stated, the end lips of the body, and those of the cover arranged as explained, these latter lips serving to fasten the cover in place on the box so as to prevent it from being moved or slid endwise on the body, while the forward lip of the cover may be turned down underneath that of the body.
Each end lip of the cover is separated its.
ends from the two side lips of such cover, the same being in order to admit of such end lip beingbent or turned independently of the said side lips. The cover is to be of a flexible maresponding number of lips separated from terial capable, of being bent at or near its edges each other, and arranged in manner to co-op in manner as explained. erate with the body lips, essentially as speci- I Claimfied.
