TIME-COMPUTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1915.
Application filed December 17. 1917. Serial 110.207.399.
To all w]: om it may concern:
lie it known that 1, CHARLES L. HILL, a citizen, of the United States. residing at Albert Lea, iu the county of Frneborn and State of Minnesota. have invented certain new and useful hmn-orcments in Time-(Tone puting Devices: and l do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will on .able others hlilllitl in the art to which it uppertains to make aml use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly ellicient computing device for finding the time in months and days within a your limit, that has elapsed since any past date and the current date, or between the current date and some future date, or between any two dates.
To the above end, the invent-ion'consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims. In the nccompanying drawin" I like chhifactcr's indicote like parts throughout the several. .viei'vs.
Referring to the drawings;
Figure 1 is a face view of the.=-invention;
Fig. 2 is a. view corresponding to Fig. 1, .with the exception that the cover plate is removed and some parts broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a. view in sectiontaken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Z
The numeral 4 indicotesia frame having a removable cover 'plate '5held in position by upper and lovver turn-buttons 6. This rental sight lope'nm open in -38," which sf ,Formed in lihe ramex to. 5 and ibe-sigh, m
thefienie 4, a pivot in having rotati vel y mounted thereon'a dlsk lL. Rigidly secured "to-the. edge of the disk 11-, isa radially projecting finger piecelQ, by which said disk be iven half rotations either dirceet. the
ttom' 'Thef fre e142 momma of leftof the recess 9 is a guide ndsj iier'allel to; said guide channted' to slide inthe guide channel s a'fmovoble scale 15, graduated from e rcept'iior avg-quark straight sight 1 at large cats, from .the; top t himn, 13, been mscal'e bnr 14,-
otheru'isv marked thereon the names of the months, towit: January to December, inclusive. reading from the top down.
Marked on the cover plate 5, on a line e. tendiugat right angles to the sightopening, 8 and through the axis of the disk 11, is an indicator 16 into registration with "which anyoneo'l the twclvemonths may lnsbrought by moving the scale 15. This movable scale is moved cndu'isc in the guide channel 1 3 by a finger piece 17. which works through an opening 18 between the frame 4 and scale bar 14. The peripheral upper edge portion of the disk ll is graduated into sixty-tw di visions, thirty-one of which are indicated by thenumerals l to 31, inclusive, and
-ed on the two scales 19 and 20 all read in the same direction. 'To linike the two scales 1'.) and 20 distinctive, the. numerals on the latter are preferably in red. By turning the. disk" 11' with the finger piece 12, the scalcs lfl md 20 may be moved under the sight. opening 7 and the scale 19 may be moved pii'st the indicator 16.
. Concentric with the movable scales 19 and 20 and also the sight opening 7, is a quadrantal fixed scale 21 graduated into thirtyone divisions. indicated by the numerals O to 30. inclusive, printed or otherwise marked on the. cover plate 5, inward of the sight. opening-7. It is important to note that the zeronmrk on the fixed scale 21 is directly opposite the indicator 16 and'that the numerals read from theleft to the right,
whilethe numerals of the cooperating movable scales 19 and 20 read from the right to' the' left.
The fixed scale bar 14 is graduated from top to bottom and the-graduations are indicated byt o columns of lllllllflllllS of two groups eae: and both colunms of numerals read from the bottom upward. The lower and upper groups of numerals in the righthand column are indicated by the numerals 23 and-22, respectively, and the lower and upper groups of numerals inthe left-hand column. are. indicatedhy the numerals 25 and 24, respectively. The numerals "in group rcad.l to 11., inclusive, and the numorals in group 22 read 0 to 11, inclu sive, the zero graduation being directly opright-hand column.
To make the two columns of numerals on the fixed scale bar 14 distinctive, with respect to each other. and associate the same with the. two movable scales l9 and 20, the numerals in the righthand column are black to associate the same with the black numerals of the movable scale 19 and the numerals in the left-hand column are red to associate the same with the red numerals of the movable scale 20. -]t is, of course, undcisto'od that in place of using red and black colors, in distinguishing the two columns of numerals on the fixed scale 14, with respectto each other, and associating the same with the two movable scales'19 and 20, suitable other distinguishing characteristics may be used.
From the above description, it is evident that by operating the finger piece 12. the movable scales 19 and 20 may be oscillated beneath the sight opening 7 to bring certain of the numerals indicated on the fixed scale 21.- It is also evident that by moving the finger piece 17 any one of the months,.i'ndirated on the movable scale 15, may be brought into registration with the indicator 16." lVhen-on'e' of the months indicated on the scale15'is in registration with the indicator 16, the other months are directly opposite certain of the numerals in the several ample, suppose we wish to know groups 22, 23, 24 and 25;
- In the drawings, the movable scale 15 is in a position which brings thelmoi'ith of November .in registration with the indicator 16. It will also be noted that the numeral 14 of the movable scale '19 is inregistrationwith the indicator 16,-so that the computingv device is'set to read NoremberM, which is assinncd to be the. present day. iForexhow long a note has run, dated Julyv 19tlii The first which. as
.month in days step to locate the numeral 19011 the scale'2l'; and radially opposite this numeral is the numeral 25 in the movable Scale 20, previously stated, is in red ink to associate the same with the left-hand column of numeralsof the same color, including groups 24' and '25.-tif the fixed 801110.151.
This numeral 25. of the 'movable scale 20 represents the' intervening fraction. of a The ncxtistep is ito locate the month of -.Tuly on the movable scale 15 and opposite:
of the movable scales, scales being graduated. .to represent the lictwi'rclr July 19th and :No
months between July 19th and November 14th. It will thus be seen that the time elapsed between July 19th and November 14th is 'three calendar months and twenty five days.
By reference to the drawings, it will be noted that plus signs are marked on the movable scale 15 in the graduations next below the months having 31 days, towit: Jannary March, May, July, August, October and DecemberQand that the minus sign is marked in the graduations next. below the month having less than-thirty days, towit: February. The purpose of these plus and minus signs is for use in determining the intervening days between two given dates, when it is desirous of calculating thirty-day months. In the example previously given. the number of days between July 19th and November 14th and twenty five days.
If it is desirous of determining the number of days for the-same period. working on the basis of thirty-day months. it will be hccessary' to add to the total number of days the three extra days included in the months ofJuly,'August and October. orin other words. the number of plus signs. indicated betwecn'the months of July and Novemben The above described device, while extremcly simple and of smallcost to manufactine, has; in Actual usage. proven highly efficientfor the, purpose had in view.
\Vhat I claim is v v A time computing device comprising a. frame, two cooperating movable scales, and two fixed scales cooperating one with each of the movable scales, one of said movable scales being graduated to represent the months of a year and the cooperating fixed scale .having two distinctive sets of nume'ralsthe numerals ofeachset being arranged in two groups, each representing intervening months, the other of saidmovable scales having two distinctive sets of. nu-
