Description

WILLIAM HEMME.
Improvement in Carriage Running-Gear. N0.127,767. PatentedJuneH ,1872.
8931195235: I mwwwy M WP%a/4% f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE RUNNING-GEAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.127,767, dated June 11,1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Wagons, invented by WIL- LIAM HEMME, of Michigan Valley, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas.
Figure 1 represents a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3,
'a bottom view; and Fig. 4, a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in a new mode of combining the hounds, axles, and connecting-rod of a running-gear, as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing is the front axle; B, the hind axle of the wagon. O O are the conveying-hounds projecting backward from the axle A. D D are similar hounds projecting forward from B. a is a pin swiveled at one end horizontally in a junction of one of the said pairs of hounds, and pivoted at the other end to an upright pin, 1), which is secured in the junction of the other pair of hounds. These pins to b, or their mechanical equiva- 'lent, constitute a knuckle-joint for the two axles, causing the same to turn simultaneously whenever the wagon is made to turn a corner, and the wheels to run in the same track while so turning. Each axle is at the middle pivoted to the under side of the wagon-body by an upright pin, 01, which is swiveled in or fastened to a metal plate, 0, of circular or other form. The plates 6 are bolted or otherwise fastened directly or by springs to the under side of the wagon-body, and cannot turn. but furnish smooth surfaces for the enlarged middle portions ff of the axle to bear against while turning. The enlarged portions f of the axles are preferably of circular form, and constitute fifth-wheels, as supports for the carriage-body. An extension rod, E-i. 0., one made in two parts, of which one is connected with each axleconnects the two axles in the middle. Its parts are locked at suitable extent by a sliding sleeve and set-screw, g, or other suitable fastening. This rod, when thus locked to a certain limit of extension prevents the axles from turning to either side beyond a given point, thereby keeping the wheels from contact with the Wagon-body, and preserving the latter from injury by the wheels. The rod E may be made non-extensible,ofproperlength, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hounds O D pivoted together, the axles A B pivoted to plates 0 e, and the connectingrod E, all combined, constructed, and arranged in a running-gear, as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses: WILLIAM HEMME.
