Description

NO- 127,7 13. PatentdJuneH, 1872 Jig].
Wituzsm: I 7 @Wmtm: fiww ficwwfzw gttumgs.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. CUNNINGHAM, OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRO OM AND BRUSH HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,743, dated June 11, 1872; antedated June 4, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Combined Broom and Brush Holder, invented by GEORGE B. CUNNINGHAM, of Northampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts.
The object of this invention is to improve the machinery employed in the manufacture of brooms and brushes; and it consists in an apparatus for holding the handles of brooms and brushes, constructed so as to be adjustable and suit handles of different sizes and shapes, as will be hereinafter more fully described. I
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the broom and brush holder taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 3 y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
B is a' cylindrical cap, which screws onto tube or cylinder A, as seen in Fig. 1. The orifice at the outer endof B is contracted, so as to form an internal inclined plane, F, from the point e to the end, the angle of the inclined.
plane with the tube A being twenty degrees, more or less. 9 represents wire rods, which are fast in the tube A and project out beyond the end, as seen in Fig. l. Hrepresents a jaw on each of the rods g, the outside of which is at an angleof twenty degrees, more or less,
a with its base, and corresponds with the inclined plane F of the cylinder B. The end of the tube A has a slot, 'i, for each rod, which allows the rod to spring toward and from the center.
As the cap B is screwed onto the tube, the incline F comes in contact with the angular sides of the jaws and forces the jaws toward the center, and it consequently clasps the broom or brush handle, which is placed between the jaws.
The inner sides of the jaws are cut away to receive a head or any projection on the handle.
To loosen the jaws from the handle, it is only necessary to unscrew the cap B a very little, which allows the rods to spring back with the jaws.
It will thus be seen that any of the ordinary sizes of handles of brooms and brushes may be firmly held by the same apparatus, while the handles are not marred or injured by setscrews, which are usually employed in apparatus for this purpose.
When held for putting the corn onto the broom-handle, the handle is passed through the tube A, by which it is guided and held in position. The brush-handle, being short and light, is held securely by the jaws alone.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 7 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of tube A, having journal 0, the screw-cap B, the jaws H H H, and the springs g g y, when all are constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
- G. B. CUNNINGHAM.
