I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Au g 27, 1.918
ear fi e Mar 951 se ia Y 36 To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that-I, NATHAN l-IARnor, a subject of the King of England, and residing at Hoylake, in the county of Chester, England, have invented Improved Means for the Protection of Carpets and thelike', of which the following ,is a specification.
This invention has reference to attachable and detachable means or devices for the protection of carpets and the like, and esaid of same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the appliance; Fig. 2 is a plan of same, and Fig. 3 is a plan of one of the articles or devices used.
In the drawings, 1 represents the protector proper; 2, 3, represent a foundation or substratum of two laminae of strawboard, mill board, or the like, on which the linoleum, wood, or like protector proper 1 is secured; 4 is the carpet; 5 is a socket device in the end of the foundation portion 2, 3; and 6 is a hook or tongue on the plate 7 adapted to fit within the metal socket 5; the
front hook portion 8 of the platewhich lies on the flat 9 of the stair the rounded edge of the flat.
The socket 5 consists of a thin sheet metal device, the sheet of which it is formed by being bent round into a shallow socket, of just sufiicient size to take the tongue 6 of the hook or plate device 7 and the meeting ends of the piece of metal coming together on the top as shown in Fig. 2 in the case shownor it may be below. It is provided at the top and bottom with shallow flanges 10, and it lies within the cut-out recess 12 in the upper foundation lamina 2.
The hook plate devices 6, 7, 8, in use, rest on the flat of the stair as stated, with their front portion 8' fitting snugly against the rounded front edge of the stair flat; and the carpet at lies over the plate 7 its edge being coteirminous with the edge of the pro extending over tector 1; and the hook plate device is so placed that the edge of the carpetwill come up close to v.the bend r the hook 6, which as will be seen, projects beyond the outside edge of the plate 7, so that the carpet'vvill overlap andthoroughly cover the plate.
The edge "of the protector 1 comes up against the upper flange 10 of the socket 5, and the outer edge of the base lamina 3 comes up against the lower flange 10.
The socket 5 is secured to the foundation 2 by cutting out of the plate of which it is formed, V-shaped prong parts 14, and extending them out horizontally, and having their ends passed up through the material, and clenched on the upper side, as indicated in Fig. 2; there being in the case shown, one at each edge and one at the back of the socket.
On the underside of the lower foundation lamina 3, is-or are one or more hooks 15,
the body of each of which is provided with prongs similar to the prongs 14 on the socket 5, and passed through the material, and clenched on the upper side. These hooks engage the edge of the carpet, and the hook or hooks may lie wholly, orpartly, Within the main holding plate hook 6 as shown, or
.they may be outside same in the case of there being two at each end of the protector.
It will thus be seen in this arrangement and construction, that first of all, the protector or the foundation or base portion of it, which practically forms a portion of it, has let into its edge, a socket, and also is adapted to engage the edges of the carpet by the hooks 15. Then, in addition to this, there is the other hook portion which also engages the edge of the carpet, and extends under it, and engages and holds the ends of the protective tread device proper, and alsoengages the front edge of the stair flat or tread.
By these means there is provided a simple and secure attachment or means for holding protective treads in position on the carpet, and also creeping actions, as small movements of the device in relation to the carpet,
are avoided; and the protective tread, and the carpet together, are kept firm and mad tically immovable under the hardest normal wear and action to which stair carpets are subjected; while at the same time an inexpensive yet durable construction of parts is furnished, as all the metal parts can be made out of pressed sheet metal, and do not bulge the carpet, or produce unevenness, and are practically unnoticeable' What is claimed is 1. Means for the protection of carpets, comprising a metal hook or plate adapted to lie on the stair flat, and its front to come against the front edge of same, and having a hook or tongue on one side extending inward; a protector portion having a metal socket let into its edge between the upper and lower surfaces of the protector, so as,
'not to project, and a hook or hooks at the edge of the under side of the protecting device and adapted to engage the edge of the carpet; substantially as set forth.
2.- Means for the protection of carpets comprising a protector proper having in each edge a metal socket sunk or recessed into same, and adapted to receive the tongue of a hook device, and a downwardly extending hook or hooks at the edges of the protector device and secured to the underside of same; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
