Carpets; carpet and like covers.-In means of the kind described in Specification 12878/13 for protecting carpets &c., especially stair carpets, a protector of wood. linoleum, &c., which extends across the upper surface of the carpet, has a metal socket sunk or recessed into each edge to receive a tongue on a hook .device which secures it in place. As shown, the wooden or other protector 1 has secured to its lower surface layers 2, 3 of straw-board &c. and a recess is cut in each side edge of the layer 2 to receive a bent sheet-metal socket 5, which is secured to the layer 2 by V-shaped prongs 14 cut out of the sheet-metal and having their ends passed through the layer 2 and clinched on its upper surface. The outer edges of the protector 1 and the layer 3 abut against flanges 10 on the socket. One or more hooks 15 have prongs on their inner ends clinched to the layer 3 and engage the edge of the carpet 4. A plate 7 is passed under each side edge of the carpet so that a hook 6 thereon enters the socket 5 and a front hook 8 engages the rounded front of the stair flat 9. A flat strip of metal may extend across the stair flat under the carpet and have its rear end bent up and secured by the stair rod, while its front end has a hook fitting over the hook 8. Only one layer of straw-board &c. may be used and the hooks 15 dispensed with.
