To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES IVARD WOOLLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of NewJersey, have invented a new and useful Tag, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a tag adapted for the purpose of identification, shipping, ad-

dress, weight or other indicating matter, the

same being formed of an elbow, one limb of which may be inserted into an object or body of material, baled or bundled and interlocked therewith, and the other limb comprising the tagproper which is adapted to occupy a position on the exterior of said body, whereby the matter thereon is visible.- Provision is made for additionally securing said tag proper on said body, whereby the device remains comparatively unremovable in position and may arrive at its destination on said object or body without having been detached therefrom.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a tag in normal condition embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof in operative condition.

Figs. 3 and 41 represent perspective views of other forms of the invention.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings.

1 designates the body of a tag, the same being of the form of an elbow composed of the limbs 2 and 3.

The outer terminal of the limb 2 is pointed comprising the spear head 4, and the sides of the limb are serrated comprising the barbs 5. In the lower portion of the limb 3 is the transversely-extending slot or open ing 6 which is adapted to receive the looking or securing key 7 which also is provided with the spear head 8 and barbs 9, it having on its outer terminal the finger pieces 10 for convenience in handling said key, the same acting also as flanges which are adapted to abut the limb 3 and limit the key passing entirely through said limb into the Specification of Letters Patent.

In Fig. 2 the key is of comparatively U- shape, its legs 11 having spear heads and barbs respectively thereon and the limb 3 has a plurality of slots 12 therein to receive said legs.

The operation is as follows The limb 2 is inserted primarily into the material to be tagged, said material being baled or bundled as desired, while the limb 3rests on the exterior of said material on the side thereof, leaving the outer face of said limb 3 exposed with the address of a shipper, destination, weight, and other matter thereon, it being noticed that the limb 2 interlocks with the material owing to the barbs 5 on the sides thereof, whereby it cannot be withdrawn, but the limb 3 is exposed and may be engaged by surrounding objects and drawn out or bent. To prevent this the limb 7 is passed through the slot 6 or slots 12 and driven into the material parallel with the limb 2 so as to interlock with said material similar to said limb 2 comparatively opposite to the latter and thus the limb 3 is held at both of its ends in position on the material and so controlled thereon under ordinary circumstances without liability to be wrenched from the obect.

It is evident that when the material is disintegrated, the tag may be released therefrom when it is left in condition for repeated use, the serrations or barbs 5 having been cleared of said material.

In Fig. 1 I show the limbs united by a hinge-like connection as at 13, allowing the limbs to turn on each other for convenience in setting the limbs in position or for other purposes.

It is evident that if desired the outer limb 2 may rest on the exterior of an object or body of material to be tagged, while the spurs, serrations, or barbs 5 are sumciently salient to engage with said object or body and so hold the limb in position.

In this case the face of said limb is sufliciently exposed to have the indicating matter marked thereon in any suitable manner and so presented to view.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a tag of the character stated, an elhorizontal limb is inserted, the vertical limb,

being adapted to have its face exposed on the exterior of said object, and a key on said vertical limb adapted to enter said objectopposite to said primary limb, said key having thereon means for interlocking it in said object, thus doubly retaining said vertical limb on the object, said key having thereon means for preventing its displacement outward from said object and inwardly from said vertical limb.

2. A tag of elbow form having one limb adapted primarily to enter and interlockingly engage an object, and a key'adapted to pass through the other limb and hold the tag in position supplemental to the primary interlocking limb opposite thereto, said key having thereon means for interlocking it in said object, said key having thereon means whereby when it is in operative position in said object it is prevented from displacement from said vertical limb in both outer and inner directions.

3. A tag composed of limbs forming an material in the same, and the other limb thereof being adapted to be exposed on the exterior of said object, and an auxiliary key adapted to be fitted to the latter named limb and passed through the same into said object, said. auxiliary key provided with means adapting it to be interlocked in the latter opposite to said horizontal limb against displacement outwardly from said object andinwardly from said vertical limb.

4:. A tag-of elbow form havingone limb adapted to enter and interloekingly engage an object, and av key adapted to enter the other limb and being provided with means adapted'to hold the tag interlocked in position in said object supplemental to said primaryinterlocking limb, and opposite to the latter, said key being providedwith a stop adapted to abut said vertical limb to prevent displacement of the key inwardly from the latter. r
