To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, SAMUEL M. BADGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Pauhin the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, of which the following'is a specification;
This invention relates tocertain new and useful improvements in drums and is more particularly designed to combine in the form of asingle instrument the several devices of this character which are commonly used in the modern orchestra. 0 v
An object of this invention is to provide a device of thistype which is extremely efficient and durable and which is of comparative simplicity and economy in'construction.
A further object is to provide tensi0nmeans for the instrument whereby any one of the batter-heads may be individually.

respectively, the reduced end of the male frustumb tern'nnatmg in an annular flange 7 provided with a head 8 against which the reduced reinforced end of the female frus- :tum 6 abuts when detachably secured in As is customary, the drum is provided with a plurality of tension ropes spaced equally thereabout and extending between the heads. Inthe present invention, however, each tensioning means comprises a rope passing about a sheave 10 having a hook 11 engaging the counter hoop carried upon one frustum, therope being bent to form parallel strands 12 and 13, the free ends of Wlnchpass through apertures 13 formed in the other frustum adjacent its head where they are suitably secured as by knotting. As shown in Fig. 1, the manner of securing these ropes about the shell is alternated, that is to say, the hook sheave of one rope engages .,the hoop of one frustum, {and the hook sheave of the next adjacent rope engages the ing beads 14 and 15 ,are'attached around the retaining'hoops 3 and 4 respectively, over andyagainst which the several ropes pass- Securely fastened by screws orotherwise, to the bead'of the flange 7 is an outwardly projecting bracket 16 supporting at its free end a winch B comprising a skeleton frame '17 in which are ournaled two drums 18 and I 19 adapted for independent movement and each of which hassecured-thereto a gear wheel 20 meshing witha short worm 21 journaled between ears 22 carried by the frame a crank arm 27 see Fi 4 beinm Tconnected'to an end of each of the worms whereby movement may be imparted to either of the drums desired.
Beferring'toFig. 2, a ropeor cable 23 having one end wrapped around and secured to the drum 18 is passed over one set of strands 12 and 1-3,:underthe next adjacent set, and so on entirely around the drum,the tree end of the cable 23 being then likewise wrapped about and secured to the drum 18 so that whenthe same is rotated bythe crank hoop of the other frustun'fi. Annular wear- V as aforesaid, the cable is further wound or unwound, as desired, to increase or decrease the tightening efiect on the strands over which it passes so as to have a corresponding effect on the particular parchment head associated with the counter hoop engaged by the hook sheaves of such strands. A second rope or cable 24 is similarly attached about the drum 19 and passes over the remaining strands so as to enable the proper tensioning of the other of said parchment heads.
It may be stated that this invention contemplates other means than that explained for tensioning the heads. For instance the rope forming the strands 12 and 13 may be looped about two sheaves each having a hook, similar to those 10 and 11, the ends of the rope joined tightly together, and the hooks engaged over the oppositely disposed counter hoops 1 and 2. In this event, it is possible to use a winch having but a single drum 25 (see Fig. 4) j ournaled therein and about which one end of a single cable 26 is wrapped, the cable 26 passing over all of the strands 12 and 13 spaced about the shell A, and having its free end secured to a short extension'20 from the winch. Under these conditions, the tension of the two opposite parchment heads may be adjusted or regulated by a single movement of the drum 25 in the proper direction. If desired, small sheave wheels 27 may be provided on each of the strands 12 and 13 and the cables 23, 24 and 26, seated in grooves formed in the periphery of each wheel to overcome friction.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the type described comfrustums directly joined together at their reduced ends, a plurality of tension cords secured at one end adjacent to the head of one of said frustums and at the other end having hooked engagement with the head 2. A device of the type described comprising a shell having heads at its opposite ends, said shell consisting of-a pair of has independent of the ether set of cords;
tums joined together at their reduced ends, a plurality of pa1rs 0t tension cords spaced about said shell, the alternate pairs of said cords being secured at one extremity adjacent to the head of one frustum and one ex tremity of the remaining pairs of cords being secured adjacent the head of the other frustum, the free ends of all of the pairs of cords engaging the head of the frustum remote from their several points of securance, and means passing about said cords for tensioning the same, to produce a corresponding effect upon said heads.
'3. A device of the type described comprising a shell having heads at its opposite ends, said shell consisting of a pair of frustums joined together at their reduced ends, a plurality of pairs of tension cords spaced about said shell, the alternate pairs of said cords being secured at one extremity adjacent to the head of one frustum and one extremity of the remaining pairs of cords being secured adjacent the head of the other frustum, the free ends of all of the pairs of cords engaging the head of the frustum re- 'mote from their several points of securance,
and a single and continuously tensioning means passing laterally about said cords controlled from a single point for tensioning the same to produce a corresponding effect upon said heads.
'4. A device of the type described comprising-a shell having heads at its opposite ends, said shell consisting of a pair of frustums joined together at their reduced ends, a plurality of pairs of tension cords spaced about said shell, the alternate pairsof said cords being secured at one extremity adja cent to the head of one frustum and one extremity of the remaining pairs of cords being secured adjacent thelhead of the other frustum, the free ends of all of the pairs of cords engaging the head of the frustum remote from their several points of securance, and means passinglaterally about alternate pairs of said cords for tensioning the same to produce a corresponding effect upon the head to which such alternate pairs of cords are attached.
5. A device of the type described comprising a shell having heads at its opposite prising a shell having heads at its opposite ends, said shell consisting of a pair of ends, said shell consisting of a pair of frustums joined together at their reduced ends,
- a plurality of pairs of cords spaced about said shell, the alternate pairs ofsaid cords being secured at one extremity adjacent to e the head of one frustum and one extremity of the remaining pairs of cords being secured adjacent the head of the other frustum, the free ends of all of the pairs of cords engaging the head of the frustum remote from their several points of securance, and a plurality of separate means for tensioning each set of alternate pairs of cords 6. A drum comprising a pair of frustum shells separably and directly joined at their small ends and forming drum heads at their large ends, a plurality of cords extending longitudinally of and detachably coupled to said heads and means operable from a single point for contracting said aforesaid cords to hold said heads under tension and the small ends of said sections together.
7. A drum, comprising, a single pair of frustum shells, directly and detachably joined at their small ends and assisting in forming drum heads at their large outer ends and means for detachably holding said shells together.
8. A drum, comprising, a single pair of frustum shells, directly joined at their small ends, drum heads on the large ends of said shells and means for holding said heads on the outer ends of said shells under tension and for simultaneously holding said shells together. i I I In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification SAMUEL BADGER.
